Title: how many Q*Bert owners/fans out there?
Post by: vintagegamer on August 10, 2007, 09:33:27 am
I just recently scored an old Q*bert cab, complete and working- the only thing I've found so far that's missing is the electrical interference shield that's supposed to cover the PCBs on the back panel.  I got it up and running last night and played about 10 games-  I still laugh at the *THUD* when characters fall off the pyramid!

I don't really care for qbert. I find the violence and cursing to be too offensive.

My issue with the machine is I have to find this shield thing to cover over the PCBs- otherwise I have to play with the back door of the cab open..

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm typically a lurker in here and I just had to pop in and say "LMAO"!  Definitely got my quote of the day!  LOL!

Hopefully the LMAO part wasnt' too offensive!  :)

The executive at a previous company I worked for was one of the original team members for the Q*Bert project.  (a very cool guy)

He originally wanted to call it "Snot and Boogers" which obviously didn't fly.  Cool hearing about all the old stories nonetheless.

He also did the old Bases Loaded game, and MACH 3 I believe.

I recall reading that Q-Bert had that cannon type nose cause they originally intended Q-Bert to be able to shoot through it but that never materialized. They still kept the nose though. As for the falling noise, they would rig a small sand bag or something like that to fall inside the arcade cab whenever Q-Bert would fall ingame to make it seem realistic. Nifty!

Q-Bert was one of the first if not the first arcade game I played back when I was a tyke. I've been putting off making my cab due to budget constraints but its design is a tribute to the original Q*Bert cab. Not an exact replica but it will contain some of its similarities.  ;D

The machine I have is basically requiring video adjustment every time I power it up (ie it requires some horiz or vert adjustment b/c it will either roll from left to right slowly or things like that)- once adjusted it's fine until the next time you shut it off.  Is that something that a cap kit resolves?  (I know, everyone's probably saying JUST LEAVE IT ON THEN!!)  :D

Wow- not many replies on this one..

So does that mean that a Q*bert cab is somewhat rare?  Or it just doesn't have much of a fan following today?

R U kidding.

I'd ^(*)&#$%$% for a Q*bert !!!

It's about time you post pictures here of your cab !! :D

There wasn't much of arcades here in Holland, I actualy think the one's that existed then, still exist now (only in really touristic places). Anyway, near my school, there was this little "business" that had a soccer table and one videogame and maybe a pin, don't remember that. That was it. On top of that they served soft drinks. Don't ask how they made a living out of that, but on the other side, the first game they had was Ms.Pac Man. Every break and after school we were there, battling each other's scores.

Then the Ms. Pac got replaced by Q*bert. I first went nuts because I love(d) Ms. Pac.....but then I started to get into Q*bert and really liked it a lot !!! The first time I heared the thud-sound I thought I got a free game, because that's what I knew from the pinballs :D

Anyway....I've got the first part for building a Q*bert: The coil and plunger that creates the thud sound.....:D

You might want to post this monitor question over on RGVAC or the Klov.com forums.

Does the knocker still work?

Yep, the knocker still works and is loud as crap!  The machine is in great shape overall, it just has the typical "no sound" issue to work through.  It still 'talks' which is great- I ordered a new chip that should be here this week, hopefully that will fix the sound prob.

I will post some pics soon!
