In your opinion, what the best way to setup the button config for Super Nintendo games? If I have 6 buttons like so:
OOO
OOO
Which buttons would you make for A,B,Y,X,L, and R?

I would go with the the Street Fighter layout and number them like they where on the controller.

So basically;
Y X L
B A R
Although, i don't know how it might handle certain games like the Mario games where you are supposed to hold down Y to run then be expected to use B and A for the different ways of jumping. Perhaps you can use the original Snes Advantage joystick setup as shown below.

Or personally I would go with the Neo-Geo 4 button layout with three buttons on top setup that most people have been using for their cabs. it goes like this;
OOO
OOO
O
At least this way you can reconfigure it when playing a game like street fighter then change to something else when playing Mario bros. It somewhat resembles the Snes advantage setup.

I doubt you'll find one controller configuration that's perfect for every game. If you're using ZNES, you can change the controller configuration for each game if you like.

L X R
Y B A
(allows me to use XYBA for Smash TV ... but really what's the point,
if you already have MAME on your system? -- unless you are
really hooking up to just a SNES and not a pc)
Coin button = select
1-player (or 2 player) button = start
(even though on my cab they're reversed left/right)
Truth to tell, I would most likely use my USB gamepad for
these most of the time... why I put a USB port on my
cab in the first place.

if I had to use the SF lay out?
L X R
Y B A
honestly though, it wouldnt really matter if you had one preference or another, most EMUs let you alrter inputs and on top of that most games let you do that too (Like Street Fighter II )

same here :)
I believe this is how it was on the CAPCOM POWER STICK FIGHTER (can't remember the exact name) ... an EXPENSIVE arcade stick they used to sell in the early 90's.

For my console emulators (NES, S-NES, Genesis, Gameboy, Atari, etc.) I have found the Logitech Dual Action gamepad to work very well. Much better than my CP controls.
The pad is only about $20 give or take.
