Title: v54: MaLa Layout [new: 1024x768 , 640x480, full screen, .psd)
Post by: shock_ on August 07, 2007, 10:36:57 am
NB - The version attached to THIS post is designed to be a square so horizontal / vertical orientations are identical.  A full 4:3 version is available in a post much further down (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=69785.msg786237#msg786237), with layouts pre-rendered for at 640x480 and 1024x768, plus a Photoshop file if you choose to do some fiddling.

A while back I was working on a MaLa layout - I've done infinite crap variants of it, but thought I might bundle something and set it free now.

I've submitted to the MaLa site for Swindus to consider adding to the layout downloads (http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/layouts.html) page there ... if you want it, wait for Swindus to upload it  ;)

It's based on backgrounds at 1280x960 but is 4:3 scalable, rotatable, requires two fonts (included), and really wants to have those nice big Mr Do! cabinets set for Definable 1.

It can be hacked to support machines for emulators other than MAME if you're willing to give up a marquee or some other field available to non-MAME emulators ... or if you take the time to combine all your lists and run via batch files under the main MAME config etc.  Such exercises are left to the reader :)

edit: submitted to MaLa website September 26 2007. Download (http://mala.arcadezentrum.com/layouts.html) available there whenever Swindus gets to it, or attached below (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=69785.0;attach=85286).

So does this layout include all cab pictures?
Title: Re: New MaLa layout if anyone wants it
Post by: shock_ on August 07, 2007, 05:34:48 pm
That's what Mr. Do's Arcade is for :)

http://www.mameworld.net/mrdo/mame_cabinets.html

I have all those merged in a directory with the older, smaller but more numerous Arcade Art ones (overwritten by Mr Do's better quality versions where necessary) to give the biggest coverage.  There are still heaps without cab shots, but hey.

I also run a variant on a similar layout for my own machine which brings in pinball tables, box scans etc as well as cab shots.  That's quite nice but requires some MaLa config kludging since the definables aren't shared for non-MAME emulators  :'(

edit: here's the post where I described this (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62620.msg640263#msg640263) the last time this layout (almost) saw the light of day.

Sorry been meaning to get back to this.

The file's been downloaded 19 times and there isn't a single comment about whether it works or not  :banghead:

Anyway, I think I found a few bugs with it that I haven't finished tweaking yet.

When I release an update to it, I'll probably package a bunch of colour variations too, since I can't help myself.

For those who are vaguely interested, I have more waffle and screenshots in my project thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=60685.msg721075#msg721075)

Hi Shock,

I have downloaded this and I am currently using it no problems etc like I did mention in your project thread.
I would recommend you upload to the mala site. It's good to go!

Great work as always :applaud:

I'll try and tidy things up in the next few days and submit a finished layout.

Hello Shock_.  Hey, I have been reading through some of the forum posts concerning some of the Mala layouts you have created in the past.  There was one layout that caught my eye.  I can't find the post at the moment, but the layout included buttons for multiple emulators.  I was wondering if you would be willing to share that layout and or see if you can't dig it up for me?  I am new to the Mala world but have been working on playing with it to try to familiarize myself with the FE before I actually set it up.  I know that I will want to use Mala and more than likely will have to setup a tree within Mala.  So your layout looked like it was what I need.  Good layouts are hard to come by and I don't have the knowledge to create one myself to my liking.  Please PM me when you get the time to do so.  I would love for you to help me out if that is possible.  Thanks, Shane

Thanks for taking the time to do the layout, I second that you release the other layout that Shane is talking about. It looks great as well!

There have been heaps of variations on basically two core layouts - click some links in posts of mine above, or check this post out.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62620.msg637052#msg637052

I think you meant this one? (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=62620.0;attach=68314;image) (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=62620.0;attach=68313;image)

That one is nearly the same layout as this, but with an emulator menu built in.  The thing is - the way I've done layouts with "buttons" (really just a highlighted menu - there's no mouse cursor control in MaLa) is to avoid MaLa Tree.  I have nothing against it, but wanted to do things another way.

If you think about it a while you might see that this way of doing things is quite particular to the number and type of emulators I run - and makes releasing it in any useful format for other people exceedingly difficult.  To be useful, you'd need to get in and generate new images to suit one specific software configuration, and by that stage (and if you have the skills/software to do that) you may as well just generate your own layout files.  I have sent the PSD files to a few people who have wanted to tinker; I have no idea what, if anything, ever came of that.  And unfortunately I'm really too busy these days to do custom work for people...

Mala's great in that you can bend it to do so many different things - I do encourage you to explore and play :)

Hello Shock_.  Hey you found it for me.  This is the layout that I am looking for.  There was another that you posted (v5d.jpg) that I think would work better for me.  Both are very close designs though.  Can you dig up the v5d design that listed in one of your above links?  Can you email me all of the necessary files for this layout in zip/rar format?  I would like to see what I can do with this layout.  Mala layouts are very hard to come by and to be honest, I have not found any that I like.  Unfortunately, my skills are not up to par in creating/designing in Photoshop.  Looks like your layout is pretty much complete.  Like you said, I would have to modify the buttons to suite my needs but hey, that is better than creating from scratch.  I have provided my email in my profile.  Again, great work and see if you can't dig up those files and email them my way.  Thanks, Shane

Well whaddya know - there's a 2 meg limit on MaLa layout uploads :)

What to do, what to do... obviously the answer is for me to get over my colour indecision.

Can anyone (with taste) who has tried this suggest which colour to submit as the official build?

I think we have a winner.

For the last two years I have been using the GameLauncher vertical layout on my cocktail cab.

Looks like I will have to try this on for size   :applaud:

Just some feedback.

This layout is staying on my cab. Its simple n sexy...

I probably will mod it a bit so it will utilise all of the screen when using it vertically though.

Other than that  :notworthy: :notworthy:

Glad you found it useful ...  I feel special displacing Gamelauncher... kinda like beating Kasparov or something :)

Is that tweak necessary because your cab display isn't 4:3, or is there a bug that you can see?

Either way, here is a working Photoshop file for anyone who feels the need to tweak a few things.

ahh yes, well it's supposed to be square so that's a feature, not a bug!  ;)  Horizontal & vertical can be identical if you use squares... nice for us rotating/three-sider types.

Should be easy enough to adapt if you'd rather reclaim the space.

Hey loadman, ever figure out how to get rid of those black strips on the vertical layout of this theme?

This guys is making an awesome cocktail cab and were putting together a theme for him (well dmworking is)

See what happens, but post on aussiearcade and let us know

I'm just curious why the layouts have black strips above and below or to the left and right. Why not use the entire real estate of the screen?

If you released this layout with that fixed I'm sure there would be no questions. We were just going to take your theme and overlay this image (http://cobawsky.deviantart.com/art/Area-51-Art-56617223) from deviant art for Nidzdotnet's cocktail.

I guess loadman was curious about the same thing. He wanted to use this theme on his cocktail but was curious about the black strips above and below the screen. If you can remove those, you have a great layout for Mala.

I'm not a Mala user but I support whatever FE people choose and I happen to love the Mala community and people so I'm happy to help out where I can even if I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to Mala.

If you can solve these issues and maybe PM dmworking (are you a bloody aussie too hehe), that would be great. dmworking already has a great looking theme but it still has those ugly black borders.

Here is the sort of effect dmworking came up with at the end
http://www.got2getalife.com/temp/sample3a.jpg

This is a cocktail vertical cab though remember, so we need that design minus the black strips on the top and bottom of the screen.

Hi,

I have the un-modded layout on my cab so far... :)

It's on my to-do list to mod it Using the PDF of the background image I downloaded from a earlier post in this thread.  Should not be very hard.  Then the super easy bit is just to use the layout editor to move the elements around to match it.

Next week maybe

I'm just curious why the layouts have black strips above and below or to the left and right. Why not use the entire real estate of the screen?

It was designed as a layout for a rotating cabinet (specifically, mine) - as a square, the horizontal / vertical layout is the same.  I have no problems if people would like to modify it to suit one or the other, however - as Loadman says it's just a matter of reworking the image then lining up everything in MaLa layout to suit.

Here is the sort of effect dmworking came up with at the end

Nidz mentioned they're 17" LCDs so I'm assuming they're 1024x1280 native (vertical).  Check this out:

Here is the hack I did for my vertical cab.....

There was some extra room so I added more game lines and a spot for a marquee.

Many thanks go to : (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/avatars/user/avatar_12140.png)

For people downloading this... note: you still need to install the fonts to windows (Supplied with the original version of v54)

Here is a slight update.
  • Vertical and horizontal now span the full aspect ratio.
  • 1024x768 and 640x480 variations provided.
  • Photoshop source file included if you want to mix it up a bit, make your own resolution or whatever.  See example to the right, made by pasting a layer into the Photoshop file at the appropriate level.

Choose your download as follows:
  • 1024 x 768 version (part 1 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=51525.0;attach=93582), part 2 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=51525.0;attach=93583))
  • 640 x 480 version (1 part only (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=51525.0;attach=93584))
  • Photoshop file, zipped (1 Part only (http://mihd.net/ndi3kb), click "request download link")

I couldn't be stuffed adding a readme to this tonight - hope you can cope without one for a while!
