I love this game on my Mame machine, but have never played (owned) an original. One has come up for sale in my area that I'm thinking of getting, but was wondering if the original is that much better than the mame version due to the special vector monitors that these use. Just looking for opinions. thanks.

The vector monitor, the blue overlay, the mirror, the blacklight reflective asteroids... few machines lose more in MAME than Asteroids Deluxe.
-
Vectors look WAY better in their original cabinets. MAME is good for checking out the gameplay, but you lose all the ambiance and "pop" that vectors provided. Even the original Asteroids is a million times better on an original cabinet.
-
AD is like a DOTE, too... all sorts of cabinet specific extras that you can't do in mame.
-
There really is no substitute for the original - this is one that Mame can never do justice to...

*cough*Omega Race*cough* ;D

That is *so* true. There are so many things about that particular game that MAME just can't do. I hope to own one some day.
So OP, nab it!! :)

And (hopefully) you can add the new Asteroids kit to it!

I was never a big fan of Asteroids Deluxe itself.
I loved all the glitz on the cabinet, but hated the too accurate ships, and the fact that they always run into/shoot the last asteroid, etc...
Asteroids in a Deluxe cab would be awesome though.
-
Oh wow I want that kit in my AD (which is sitting across from Space Duel).
-
I want a Gravitar.
Unlike certain other people on this forum though, I'd prefer the traditional cabinet version, as opposed to the kitchen counter one. :laugh2:

Actually I was talking ABOUT you.
You're several steps closer to a Gravitar cab than me, so...
All you need now is....well....the CAB part.
You have a really nice collection of guts for it though.

For this alone, I may have to add an Asteroids Deluxe to my collection...

Wow, that is awesome. I loooove Gravitar. The artwork on that cabinet is so cool. If only I had the room.............
The picture looks quite bright. What kind of monitor is that. I wish my PC monitor was that bright.

That monitor is an 19 inch Amplifone Vector. I just had it rebuilt.
