Title: u360 Dual8wayjoy question
Post by: mlalena on August 03, 2007, 03:14:16 pm
Is this possible:

This is the standard Ultimarc UltraStil 360 8-way layout
(http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/2499/u360normaldj4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

For Smash TV, I was going to have all 4 player joysticks straight with the monitor for games that require 2 sticks per player. But, what if I do angle the Player 3 joystick so that it is at a 45 degree angle to the monitor (like a SlikStik Quad layout). The U360 layout would be standard, just the stick is rotated 45 degreees, like this:
(http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/6990/u360rotatedim8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Then, for 2 stick per player games, I would change the Player 1 U360 layout to this:
(http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/1236/u360twistedmp4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)
This basically rotates the P1 joystick 45 degrees in software. The player can face the monitor at a 45 degree angle and use both sticks normally. For the P1 stick, Up & to the right is converted into Up, Up is converted to up & to the left.

P3 & P4 would have a standard 8 way layout. P1 would have the special layout above, and P2 would have the mirror image of the layout above.

Well, I don't see any pictures, but I'm guessing yes, you could do that.

Also no pics, but not only can u360 can do that, but you can do close to that in mame.  Remap so up is up & left OR left not down OR right not down.

AFAIK, the new 9x9 analog to digital just added to mame applies to all analog sticks or none, so you couldn't use it for this case.

edit: corrected spelling

ok. images fixed.

Also realized that only the P1 & P2 joysticks need to be the UltraStik 360's can use Super8's for the outer 2 joysticks and still have this work.

I'm doing almost this exact thing on my newest project.  I have NOS Wico 8-ways as the p3 and p4 sticks with U360s for p1 and p2.  The outer sticks are angled 30 degress toward center (45 deg is way too much based on the width of my CP), so I'll need to jerry-rig myself up some mappings.

...pictures soon...

Can the U360s have different layouts for P1 and P2. When in dual stick mode: for P1, up will now become up and left. On P2, up will become up and to the right.

Yes, they may have different maps assigned to them.

Yup.

Mame has a very similar 9x9 mapping, but it's a general mapping that applies to all joysticks.  Sorry, I did not mean to imply the u360s had the same limit in my earlier post.
