Title: Go Time: how to build control panel (materials advice)
Post by: HeadRusch on April 26, 2003, 01:00:05 pm
I've got all Happs buttons and sticks, and I think a stick or two from Andy....

I've got 1/2" MDF and 3/4" MDF.

Which should I use for the control panel so I don thave to get funky with a router to do insets for joysticks, etc.

At first I was thinking I'll just do a Marble Contact Paper cover on the wood....maybe put Lexan on top of that if I can get HD to cut it to shape for me (can I just use a simple jigsaw to cut it??)...but now depth concerns me.

1/2" MDF with lexan on top, which will show smudges....or 3/4" MDF with no lexan and contact paper or paint on the CP...

???

You don't HAVE to route under the joysticks when you use 3/4" MDF.  My CP uses 3/4" MDF with 1/8" lexan on top and i didn't route underneath.  It's all a matter of preference.  If you want your sticks to be "long" then go with the thinner material or route.  It's just not necessary.  In fact, when i bought my used arcade cabinet the "real" control panel was made of 3/4" particle board with a graphic overlay and 1/8" lexan on it.  The underneath was NOT routed for joysticks.  This is how it was used in the arcade and that's good enough for me. :)

If you're really concerned about joystick height, use the 1/2".  Though, keep in mind that having your entire CP made of 1/2" material won't be nearly as strong.  You're going to NEED that lexan on there to help add some strength.

I personally would never use contact paper or paint on my CP.  Doing a graphics overlay covered by lexan just looks SOOOOO much better.  Sure, it shows smudges.  But it also cleans up very easily and adds a touch of class and professionalism to your cabinet.

It depends on your joysticks. All my GOOD joysticks only work on metal panels due to short handles. But those cheesy happ sticks work on anything.
