Title: Mala not finding mame roms...
Post by: melarky on July 29, 2007, 01:21:44 pm
I have been working on getting Mala installed on my cocktail computer and I've been using Uncle T's guide he wrote up.  I'm at the point were I have all of the directories set up and mame installed, but for some reason, after I put the paths in Mala and it asked to refresh the game list, it doesn't load any games.

I have tested mame from the command line and it works, the roms are there, and it seems like it should work, but nothing is populated into the list.  Anyone have any ideas?

Could you attach some screenshots of your MALA settings for MAME?

I am attaching a screen shot, thanks for your help UncleT (and for your guide, it has been awesome, and I'm 100% positive that I'm the problem, not your guide).

Hmmm... I've been goofing with it, and it looks like it may be because of my xml file is no good (it's 0kb).  I had mame32 installed on this computer before I installed command line and mala, and I think that may be conflicting or something (every time I try to make an xml file it flashes something on the screen about mame32, which is weird).

I'm deleting and getting rid of mame32 and will try again, hope I can get this going as MALA looks really cool and should be great for the cocktail table.

Ok, I'm an idiot, it wasn't a "Mame32" path, but a "System32" path.  I still deleted mame32, but that was just to clear up space I guess.  It still won't make an xml file (it creates it, but it's 0kb).  Anyone know what could cause this?

I thought MALA should create an XML file for you if you do not have one, so I am not sure why this is not working.    Do you have permissions set correctly to allow the file to be created?

I have not been keeping up with Mame lately, but can you still you the "-listxml" option in Mame to generate an XML file ?

Hopefully Loadman or swindus chimes in .....

I tried that "-listxml" option in mame, and it also gave me an error.  I wonder if it's because I am using version .69 (it's an old Pentium III 1Ghz, so I'm using an older mame).

According to this link...

...the listxml option was added in version .69a.  Therefore you can get a slightly newer version of Mame to use, or you could just download and run it just long enough to create the xml file for Mala to use.

I got that .69 from mame.net (from their "older versions" section).  It's the latest they had in that section.  Does anyone know where to get a newer one (doesn't have to be .70 exactly, can be newer too).  I'm going to go check google, but when I looked before I found a bunch of ports of different versions (like for dreamcast and xbox etc... but not for computer).

I think I found version 0.73b.  I'll give that a try (hopefully that does it).

According to the MaLa website you need > 0.84.

I use .79 but I used .89 to generate a XML file   ;D
