Title: Simple, yet logical setup for Neogeo + Capcom games
Post by: paulkortne on April 25, 2003, 07:02:12 pm
I'm surprised that I have not seen anyone else use this controls setup for playing Neogeo and Capcom games.

This setup is better than the norm for two reasons:

1. The position of the joystick (in the center of the three rows of buttons) makes it so your hand is not either too far up or to far down when using either the neogeo, or capcom/fighter layout.  On most layouts, the joystick is between the first two rows of buttons.  This puts the joystick unnecessarily high up when trying to play neogeo games.

2. No lame button lableing on the control panel is needed since the button colors differenciate between the three main game layouts:  red = capcom/fighters, blue = neogeo, and red+blue = 90% off all games buttons.  Pretty simple.  Although, stating that on the monitor bezel would look fine too, since it wouldn't take up much room.

I have built a one player panel with this layout, so I can confirm that this is extremely comfortable for playing both Neogeo games, and fighters.

Whoops, it looks like i accidently switched my "red" and "blue" around in my post.

I like the ideas with the colors.  Simple, yet effective.  But there are a few problems i see with that layout (for me, at least)

1) The buttons are too far away from the joystick.

2) You still end up with the Neo-Geo buttons being 2" lower than they were in the arcade.  I played with my CP this way for a while and it was just very uncomfortable.

In the end, i dumped the 7th button and stuck with a plain ol' Capcom 6-button layout.  You have an original idea though, and that's more than most of us can come up with.

Take a look at my control panel
(http://www.geocities.com/cthulhuluke/Cabinet/controlpanel.txt)
I use the layout like this:
Neo Geo setup
    B  C  D
A  x  x  x

Capcom setup
    P  P  P
x  K  K  K

it works really well, because you have the bottom of your hand when you're playing neo geo over the bottom buttons, and unless you're a midget, your hands don't even get close to touching the other buttons, just the natural contour of your palm prevents it.  And capom games with the countoured buttons is seriously awesome.

The buttons and joystick are positioned on a 1.5" grid.  Had I moved the joystick closer to the buttons, it would not fit on the grid, and/or the mounting plate thing would overlap with the 7th button.

I don't feel like the joystick is at all far away to the buttons.  Where they are, its about the same distance as your hands are apart when typing on a keyboard.  If the joystick was closer my hands would touch, and i don't like that

I contemplated having a more "hand friendly" layout for a long time, such as yours, but in the end I wanted to be true to both the Mortal Kombat 3/4 and neogeo layout.

Well, with the exception of the color coding:
