Title: Mag Stick PLUS + Fighters = NO GO? Looking for your feedback...
Post by: ARTIFACT on July 27, 2007, 12:17:12 am
Someone recently pointed out to me in a thread that the Mag Stick PLUS joysticks had too short of a throw to play fighters at all (special attacks in SF2 for example)

Do some of you play SF2 and other fighters with Mag Stick joysticks fine?

I just received my shipment from Divemaster yesterday, including 2 mag stick plus sticks... I should have done some research / asked on BYOAC I guess... I mainly wanted to easily switch between 4 and 8 ways - this model allows switching from the top. I want to play pac man (etc) with true 4-way without getting "stuck" ... AND play fighters comfortably.

I've seen folks install a dedicated 4 way stick in the center of their CP ... isn't there a way to use 1 set of sticks that do 4-way well AND are comfortable fighter sticks?

What are your thoughts?

I haven't used the magsticks before, but I have noticed that fighters are much easier/better on a stick with a long throw.  I also found that the long throw makes 4-way games more playable than they are with a short throw 8-way.  I have some wico microswitch sticks on my cab now and find them much more fighter friendly than the "Omni-stick basics" (aka something else, but I don't remember what) I started out with.

My cabinet is too narrow for a 3rd stick to be added so I would like to find a long-throw switch-from-above solution too.  While some 4-way games like Klax, Frogger, and even Pac-Man are OK with the long 8-way, one of my new favorites Burgertime is no good at all.

I'm keeping my eye out, and if I find nothing I may make some top mounted restrictor plates.

I used the predecessor joystick the T-Stick plus, still have one.  These were terrible for fighter games.  Were fair to poor for 8-way games that depended on the U-D-L-R directions.  But excelent for 4-way games.  I finally swapped them out for a pair of Happ competition joysticks.  Later I swapped in a 49-way stick for player 1 to switch from 8-way to 4-way electronically.

I thought about a 49 way stick, but I'm waiting for a new one that has been just on the horizon for a while.  The company usually offers great products so hopefully this stick will not disappoint.

Randy... we're waiting. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62994.0)

If fighting game is your main event, I would just swap them out with Happ competition joysticks.  They work great for fighting games.  And they don't cost much either.

How do the competition sticks work in Ms Pac Man, Dig Dug (etc)?

Does it get "stuck"?

My X-Arcade gets "stuck" in these games - you hit one of the 4 ways and it doesn't respond (conflict because of 8 ways...)

... and can I fit red balltop sticks on them? :)

I want to avoid having a separate 4 way dedicated stick if I can...
