Title: Tempest Kit anywhere? anyone?
Post by: Kingspinner on July 25, 2007, 08:46:24 pm
Hey fellas ~ I have a buddy who is all over Tempest, and I was wondering if anyone has access or knows someone or some site that sells a kit for the specs on a Tempest Cab. I have the time to do the artwork for him, but I need the specs on all the cab parts. Please help if you can! He wants the original. (Who doesn't)  :wootThank!

Do mean "specs" as in just to build the actual structural portion of the cabinet?

As for "specs" on the original "guts" of the cab.

Kits?.... No.

Specs - meaning structural part.. The guts will be mame driven. I wanted to give him room for expansion for future games.. I might make the control panel more universal, with 2 8-ways, the spinner of course, a tracball and a load of buttons.

If it is a Tempest then the monitor will be vertical, which means LOADS of controls are not really needed.

Are you building a cabinet from scratch? or are you getting an old cabinet?  are you installing repro artwork? or are you making artwork from scratch?

Not really clear on what your intention is...

Anyway, I was able to get an old Tempest cab and install an SVGA monitor in it (open frame arcade type monitor).

Works and looks great, and my wife loves it.

I will keep it as a Tempest cabinet, even though it is MAME-driven and I could put more games on it ...(already have full MAME cab plus some other dedicated cabs)... It is really nice having a dedicated Tempest cab to play Tempest.

In my opinion, a Tempest would not look good with a joystick on it... some guy on Ebay put a 48-in-1 kit in a Tempest cabinet and here is the result...it is actually hideous... :scared

Tempest is such a unique game that it really deserves its own cabinet... and if your friend is really a Tempest fan, I think he will more appreciate a dedicated Tempest cab than a MAMEd Tempest cab with a bunch of non-Tempest controls on it...
Just my opinion...

I know my wife would cut off MY... "joystick"... if I dare put a joystick on her Tempest cab that she loves so much... ;D

Sorry about the confusion.. This will be made from scratch.. I agree with what you guys are saying, re: Tempest only controls.. He seems to be really hardcore for the original, after talking more with him last night. Anywho... I am just sending the $$pricetag$$ for all the work needed to him, and he gets to choose.. ...so nobody shoot the messenger around here.  :dizzy: K?  j/k

The main issue now is where to get the spinner, now that Oscar is closed... AND the best way to get a printable copy of all the art... So far I have found it all to be rastered due to the heavy blended colors.  I won't be touching the woodworking, though. ANY CLuES OUT THERE??? you guys really rock.

Wow, ArtMAME, that really is a nice Tempest Cab. Someday you should return it to it's former glory and restore it with real Tempest Parts. Maybe start picking up a piece here and there. There is NOTHING like a Vector monitor running Tempest.
