Title: switching from Mamewah to Mala worth it??
Post by: hulkster on July 25, 2007, 02:53:39 pm
so ive had my cab built and configured and stuff for about 4 years now.  back when i was building it, mamewah was all the rage.  now i see just about everyone that builds a cab these days is using Mala as their FE.  so my question is.....is switching all my stuff from mamewah to mala worth all the fuss and bother?

dont get me wrong, mamewah is a great program and its served me well all these years....but i was looking at it the other day and i was wanting to mess around with the menus and stuff a little, but didnt feel like going through all the config and everything associated with mamewah.

so would the switch be worth my time and effort?  are there any added features/fixes that make it better than mamewah?  i know that there will be some people to come out and say "well they are both good in their own right, just look at both and pick the one thats right for you."  yeah i hear ya, but thats part of my issue.....i dont want to take the time to mess around with it if its not going to make my cab FE any better.  suggestions?

I think if you are happy with your cab as it is , stay with mamewah.

I don't think Mala we'll give you more fun.

If you want enhance your cab we more feature and if you have a good machine inside, i would suggest to look at GameEX.  There is some Media center/HtPC feature that other Fe don't have in standard.

If you want animated and advance layout features look into AtomicFe .

But honnestly, i think that most of people ask to a front end is that it runs their games...  So if yours already does that, i 'd keep it!.

cool....the animated backgrounds and stuff would be neat.  are there any recommended hardware requirements for your AtomicFE?

i havent used mamewah very much..only for a few days when i was first setting up my cabinet...then i switched to MALA and havent had a need for anything else.  it works great and is easily configurable

Mala is alot easier to configure and use than mamewah. I'm still working on my arcade cab and i could never get mamewah working just right but mala i set up in just a few hours.

Yeah.. Stay with MameWah if it works for you now that you have leant it's config.

I think that is MaLa great streghth is it's simplicity of set-up but as you have allready done that with MameWah there is not a lot of point unless you want to use plugins to drive various add on hardware

One thing you could do is load MaLa up on your cab and run both for a while . You can point it to the same Mame stuff as Mamewah and it won't hurt anything

It depends directly of the complexity of the layout and the resolution of the layout

I managed to make run Atomic on a Pentium 1 , 233 Mhz with 32mega of ram... but of course with no animation and a very optimized and minimum layout in low resolution.

To be confortable for ,i'd said average layout, about a 1ghz machine is enought.

If you want just a simple animated layout and if you don't use alpha-blending feature, a Celeron 500 Mhz can be enought.

If you do huge usage of alpha-blending, reflection, animated object ,sounds and tens of video... you could need a P4 3Ghz.
