Title: Anyone ever use this Xbox Fishing Controller?
Post by: unclet on July 25, 2007, 02:10:39 pm
My kids love fishing so I thought I might get them a Xbox game and this fishing controller but I am not sure if it is worth it.  Wondering how it works and how well it works also.    Do you pull it back (like a real rod) to "hook the fish" or is this just a fancy shaped joystick and that is it?   I see that it has a handle of the reel, so I am assuming you can reel in the fish when you get a bite.

PS: I do take them fishing for real .....  this would simply be for rainy days   :P

I had one for the Dreamcast, looks almost the same as far as i can tell. had 2 or 3 games that it worked on. And yes, you use it just like a real fishing pole. You have to cast it, push the buttons like a real one. I must say if you enjoy fishing and dont mind the slower paced gameplay the DREAMCAST one and games was quite fun. The one downside I found is it was somewhat fragile. Normal use is fine, but as with real fishing you can get a bit excited, or on casts with no hok and lots of reeling you can get a bit "harsh"  I broke 2 of them (the spinny part). I have never used the X-box one but as i say it looks to be almost and exact dup of the old Dreamcast one.

Agetec made the one for PS1 (for bass landing) and I'm pretty sure they designed the Dreamcast one as well. Both worked the exact same. The controller can detect movement and the crank is analog to determine how fast you're reeling in the fish. They also have an analog stick and most of the standard buttons.

The one for XBox is made by Naki. Not a lot of info to be had on it. The most info I found on this controller is on  Wal-Mart's website (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3650792). I'm guessing it's the info from the box of the controller.

As with most specialty controllers, it's only as good as the games that support it. With a quick search I only found one game that specifically mentions the controller...Pro FIshing Challenge (http://xbox.ign.com/articles/523/523266p1.htm)

The Sega games were a lot of fun and even Bass Landing was fun for a while. And I have absolutely no interest in real fishing.

Well, this is just for the Xbox .... "Pro Fishing Challenge" ......  I do not have a Sega Dreamcast (and can not get it working on my cabinet either .... due to the video card it uses ... I think that was the problem).

Anyway, I can not find anyone who has the Naki controller in stock at the moment so I might be out of luck.   It is a real old controller I am finding out .... oh well.
