Title: N64 memory cards
Post by: danny_galaga on July 24, 2007, 08:05:27 am

anything i should know about them? i'm guessing the original nintendo ones are 256k. i see aftermarket versions going realy cheap. also a 1mb one which has a little button to scroll through four 'pages' . would that be any good or would it be a bit dodgy. ive finally tried out hydro thunder (cool port by the way) but i need a card to save details, otherwise i cant advance to the medium and hard courses. not unless i dont turn it off of course...

First party is always better but they're kind of small.  They're practically free now, if you can find them, so just buy a bunch of whatever you can get.  They're a dollar at gamestop right now (don't know if you have gamestop in Aussieland).

i think gamestop and eb games merged and ive only seen eb games around here. here they dont have ANY n64 stuff that i can see. so ebay is probably my best bet.

Ask someone at the store... they tend to gather up all their n64 stuff and ship it off to a specific location.

id stay away from 3rd party n64 memcards all together,
the ones with 'pages' corrupt if you look at them wrong.

Well, if you had just taken the time to learn how to look at them correctly... ;D

Those mem cards are just about useless. I've got at least twenty N64 titles and IIRC, only one actually makes any use of the memory card and it was optional. Nintendo couldn't even get the slot to be useful. I have a third party rumble pack (annoying) and the Gameboy cartridge adapter that you supposedly needed with Pokemon games (never used it). A perfectly good slot on the controller wasted on bad peripherals.

Most of the games have internal memory anyways. Which N64 games actually make use of the memory card?

hydro thunder is the main one that bothers me. it doesnt save your progress on the cart, only on a memory card (maybe they were using that little extra for the graphics?)

i used to need them especially to transfer characters from WWF/E games - theres no reason not to have a couple good ones if you plan on using the system.
