Basically I have the software that I'm sure can do this either adobe photoshop/ image ready / illustrator my question is I'm curious as to how I can get my 4000x4000 .png file which is about 17mb down to say 2mb or less? without loosing a noticable difference in picture quality yet retain the files dimensions?

First, why the hell are you using PNG format? If I can assume this piece of art is for your cab, PNG is just about the last format you should be using. AND, if this a high quality piece of art for your cab, at 300dpi, 17mb isn't particularly large for an image in Photoshop. One of my marquee layers alone topped out at 250mb.

4000 x 4000 to use within MAME software? As in the Artwork feature?
Just looked at some of the artwork files I have. I never realized they were done at such high resolutions...
Anyway, In Photoshop, use the "Save For Web" option from the file menu, and choose PNG-24. This should bring the file size to a more manageable range, and keep the quality.

why do you need it at 2mb? i would keep it at 17mb... for print.
