i never imagined thered be that much money in it. i guess i thought they just did it for the love it. how much must the conductor earn then?
-
I think some conductors even get millions.
-
That's insane...I would have never thought there was that much money in that.

I bet there are at least 500 out of work cellists in the NYC area... and now there is one job opening. Wwhen you consider most musicians actually lose many, if a few make 6-7figures, it still is a low average. Especially if you play your own music... once the "pay" was divided among the band, I usually didn't have enough to cover my bar tab. Plus all the money I had to spend on gear and studio time... but the worst was all the crappy shows I had to go to so I could "support" the other bands in the local scene, and try to plug my own crap.

you were in a symphony orchestra that had a bar tab? sweet!

I was wondering the same thing. Now that might be something I could get into.

Well she played at the New York Philharmonic. It's not like she was playing at some town hall or something... I'd expect that most musicians at any major orchestra make at least 6 figures based solely on the prestige of the orchestra. After all, they wouldn't be there if they weren't good.
Like it's been said though, for every person like this woman... how many cellists are there with no job at all, or working some other job because there is no work for them. I'm betting its more than a few.
-
Supply and demand... huge supply, not much demand.
Not surprising that she'd make that much dough, really, when you consider she must be world class to be where she was.
-

actually, it wasn't a symphony orchestra, it was an X-Orchestra.
I told you I was EXTREEEEEME

Isn't this pretty much the model of all entertainment industries? How many buskers or local stand up comedians are there to each Seinfeld? How many koolmecraigs are there to each Dustin Hoffman? Even most of the chorus in your average opera has a 'real job' since until they 'break out' they're lucky to earn a modest income as it is. There are millions of bands all over the world, but most of them are lucky to get regular gigs, never mind the pittance of their first recording contract, or the fact they're more likely to die in a lightning strike then ever own their own recording label. :dunno
-
for sure. i see all that now. but until i saw that article i never thought about the fact that money is being made. if i thought about it, i would have thought it was just for the love of it. next thing, people will tell me you can make money playing 'starcraft' or something...
what?? in south korea? man, i shoulda learnt to play starcraft. i shoulda learnt to bang them thermo nuclear devices...

I'll have you know that Mr. Hoffman and I are both in the top 5% of SAG earners. I do have more youtube hits on my video though, 285,858 ;D

Well, it looks like one more job opened up for'em then.

yeah so I guess the large pool of unemployed cellists will soon be one person smaller.

You guys talk about like *any* cellist can do the job. Can any guy who knows how to play baseball, join the major leagues and get 8 digit salary?
PS: Shorthair emailed me!
