ok so I have a dell optiplex with on board video running to a 27" VGA monitor. on most games the stretching is fantastic, but on games like UMK3 its letterboxed, doesnt bother me, but is there a better way to stretch other then full/auto ? Id love to put a different video card in here, but its PCI slots (not PCI express) and its like 1/2 height and most of those cards no matter how old tend to run about $60+
the letterbox doesnt bother me much, in fact I didnt notice it until today when taking this pic:

I cannot duplicate the problem here, but from the info gathered in your post it seems you might need to manually select your display size instead of using auto. Set the screen size to the native resolution of your display. If that doesn't set you up then you may have to disable [keep aspect ratio] for the stretch. Leave stretch on because you want to fill the entire screen. List your software (OS and emulator version) if you need more detailed help here.

You nailed it. MK resolution has a different aspect ratio, so it does need to be discarded in order for stretch to fill the screen.

I'm gonna mess around with settings a bit and letcha guys know what the deal is. Im using a very old MAME32 like .89u3 or something, Im trying to find a command line mame and try to set up Mala or something, of course I still daydream about figuring out Daphne, but getting some of the games to look better on MAME is my primary goal.

turns out I was using MAME32 .81u9 , so sad, I know. Also stretching either vertical or horizontal both fill the screen much better then full, so Im glad I asked. I find that Horizontal stretch without aspect ratio is the best though. RandyT if only this were a LCD then the display would be so much better, lol /inside joke
