5/8 MDF with 1/8 Plexi or Lexan
I think sinking the joysticks is the best methiod. You could try 1/2" plywood and 1/8 Plexi... but most prefer the MDF and it's easy to work with.

I used sheet metal for mine, so it is probably like 1/16" thick. In the past I have used 1/2" plywood with good results. It kind of depends on your sticks. Some sticks do fine with inch thick panels, others pretty much have to go on a metal panel.

I use 3/4" MDF and it seems fine to me. The happs joysticks can be adjusted for wood control panels, you know. My CP is also covered with 1/8" lexan as well.

I wasn't aware of that. Could you give us a quick-heads-up on how the adjustments can be done?

You can change the height of the joystick by switching around the order of the plastic parts that go around the shaft.
I used to have a pair of Happ sticks (still do somewhere), and I remember doing that. I eventually realized that all those Happ Sticks have a terrible feel, and instead started using older sticks that use a rubber return to center. They feel about 100 times better.
