Title: POLL: John or Paul
Post by: Texasmame on July 10, 2007, 07:41:42 pm
Okay, this is really the angle I'm going for on this thread (but I threw in all of 'em out of respect for them)   :notworthy:

When I think of my favorite Beatles songs, they are almost always Lennon compositions.  Based on their solo efforts, I think Paul created the more "marketable" songs, while John really created the more "musically distinguished" pieces.

In brief - Both can pen a hell of a tune, but John's had more "staying power.'

Anyone follow me here?

Am I saying John was "better" than Paul, or a bigger part of the Beatles' success?  No.  I'm just saying that I think John was the more "serious musician" of the two.

This was kicking around my head for a few days and just had to let it out.  With a Poll, 'course.

John Lennon. My two favorite Beatles songs, Bird Can Sing and Across the Universe are both Lennon compositions.
Its funny, because I like McCartney better as a solo artist (though I don't like either as a solo artist a lot).

Davy could sing, dance, act and play the tambourine.

He was a true artist who didn’t need a mail order bride to make his decisions for him.

I like John the best as a Beatle, and I like his solo stuff too, so I voted for him.

I like Paul's writing with the Beatles, but I'm not a huge fan of his voice, and actively dislike the majority of his post-Beatles efforts.

I think Ringo is a mediocre drummer who got lucky.  His post-Beatles work isn't worth mentioning.

George is an interesting case.  He was a great supporting member of the group, but was never a leader in my mind.  That said - and this will probably get me beaten down - I think that George was the best ex-Beatle.

The primary issue here is that most of the interviews I've read from the two - ranging from the 60s to Lennon's death - they were always sort of inconsistent when pressed on exactly who "wrote" each song.  I suspect there was a lot more collaboration than "john wrote X" and "paul wrote y" and the credits are a lot more about publishing than anything else.  It's really, really hard with the Beatles to cut a line between those two in terms of actual composition.  I also suspect they were both so ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- high half the time that they probably didn't even remember who did what by the time a song was recorded.

I never really followed the Monkees or whoever those guys were.  I vote for that Bonaducci guy from the reality show.  He's "Ringo", right?

While I appreciate what they did for music, I don't particularly care for their music myself. I find it gets old quite quickly. I had a friend who used to listen to Sgt. Pepper all the time in high school and I always wanted to find an excuse to violate our "my car/house, my music" rule that we all had at the time.

Lennon gets the nod for "Tomorrow Never Knows", my all time favorite Beatles song. It's from Revolver, the only Beatles album I've ever owned.
As solo artists, both are pretty hit or miss for me, with McCartney writing better melodies, and Lennon usually getting me with his lyrics.

Paul's songs always appealed to me more than John's.
My favorite album is Abbey Road by far. That record just had everything! It's too bad they didn't go on to make more. :'(

As to solo acts, they were like any other split up band thru the years - hits and misses, but more of the latter. The magic just wasn't there.

I can't see how anyone can say the Beatles sucked. :dizzy:
10 years/50 years/100 years, there will be one constant - the Beatles will still be awesome. They are timeless. Ever read The Dark Tower  ;)?

There aren't many Towers and most of them are white, narrowing it down even further.

"Let it be" is a favorite "folk song" of the folk in the books.

John and Paul were both excellent songwriters. However, John Lennon's music had more of an edge to it, and for that reason I've voted for him.

I still don't think you're getting it....

Anyway, I couldn't get thru the entire Dark Tower series.  I forgot which book I was on, it was the one where Roland meets Susanna or something, it's been a while.  The book just seemed to go on for ever without really moving the story forward.  Maybe I'll finish the books someday, or maybe I'll just wait for the mini-series, http://www.tv.com/story/8764.html

And oh yea, I was never much of a Beatles fan, so John, Paul, Matthew, Luke... doesn't matter to me...

I've heard of that project...hope it never realizes myself. Too broad of a story.

Personally, I have read the first 5. The fourth one is kind of a prequel and is an EXCELLENT stand-alone novel. I need to go ahead and get the last 2 and finish it up. I was told that the ending is VERY disappointing.

My wife and brother have both read all 7 books, and that seemed to be their feeling about the ending.

I had a WTF? moment when I finished the 7th book, but after a bit of thought, I think it may be one of the better endings I've read. It likely helps that I read the books back to back, so I didn't have to wait for 20+ years like some people did for the end. It certainly was an appropriate ending, in my opinion and truly genius if it's the one he had in mind from day one (no way to know if that's true or not, sadly).

A WTF? moment at the end would be very appropriate for this series. With the exception of book 4, WTF? moments were rampant. ;)
