Hey all,
I built my first arcade cab a while back now. It is used 99% of the time when the guys come over to knock back some beers. I have a pool table also, so they get played side by side. The arcade seems to run the same two games that work well for several of us standing around drinking.
Golden Tee 2K (99 has a vertical layout on my machine??)
World Class Bowling.
We tend to like the ones that are multiplayer, but one at a time. We have played the same three courses on golden tee over and over, and are tired of them. World class bowling is fun, but can also get old. I have like 6000 games installed. While there are a lot that dont work, most do but are not that entertaining to us. The trackball games get the most play, with shuffleshot getting thrown in rarely.
Are there any new games out there that I dont know about that would fit up our alley? Are there some good PC based games that would apply and work well on a mame cab? Suggestions would be great!
-
btw - I have done a lot of searches for PC games, but I get frustrated cause in tryin to find multiplayer games all I find are internet based multiplayers
-
Well, there are newer golf games that you can try that have different courses than Golden Tee '99.
Another game that might be fun for one of those guy gatherings would be one of the many baseball games. The home run derby is a fun mode that you can take turns playing. Golf and Bowling are pretty much perfect for that as that is how the games are played. You could also look into some of the light gun games like Police Trainer. They usually have 2 player simultaneous, but you could trade off on the levels or something playing with two teams of two. Just an idea.
I can't really think of many newer games that have the same type of one player per turn multi-player games as golf or bowling. If you find some more though, make sure you let us know. Also, you may want to invest in a dart board for your game room.

Newer PC golf games can be played on your cab if you have the resolution.

I have a 2.4G Celeron with a gig of DDR, and an ATI Radeon 9600XT 256mb video card running up to a 27" TV screen. I would think I could run most games out there. Obviously not some of the crazier games like Battlefield2 or anything, but I save those for me on my liquid cooled gaming rig I built! I'll have to check out some of the newer golf games. Which ones are good for trackball control?
I'd like to look into the light gun games but I dont have any guns at this point. Knowing what I know now I would not have built a 4 player cab with so many buttons, and done a two player with light guns. I do have a dartboard that isnt up right now due to lack of wall space. I also am working on getting an air hockey table from a friend-of-a-friend.

Here is a previous thread. I think the Tiger Woods golf games are recommended to play with a trackball.

Shuffleshot and Shuuz is fun also.
Xam

Smash TV always seems to be a hit and the fighting games (Mortal Kombat, Tekken, etc) are usually pretty safe bets, as well.
-
I have a list of games I would like to try on my machine, but they all have issues. Perhaps some of you can tell me if this is common for these games, or if there are fixes (i did search):
Star Wars - Crashes to the mame screen before it even attempts to load?
Star Wars Arcade - Crashes to mame screen after 80+% load (i think it gets to 100%)
NBA Jam - EXTREMELY quiet sound.
-
You might have some luck with an N64 emulator...
I'm not sure if Mario Golf would work w/ a trackball
or not but the multiplayer should be hotseat.
Have NO idea why the original Star Wars doesn't work
(except maybe bad romset or wrong version?)
I didn't know the trilogy game was working on MAME yet...
If you like NBA Jam, there are probably a ton of basketball
games out there... I'm not an expert on those, but I did
like Rim Rockin Basketball
-
One of my fave old games is 'Dunk Shot' - the basketball game viewed overhead and played with a trackball. Very good fun (similar to Tekhan World Cup).
Other than that, some of the old wrestling games are good - WWF Wrestlefest for one.
With over 6000 games available, has to be something good! What I found useful was to download all the MAME art, so even if you dont know the game by name, you can get a good idea of what its about from the screen shot shown. Found some gems this way...

i second that. there are quite a few consoles that have good multiplayer games on them. that will expand your selection quite a bit. i always wondered why some emus bothered with being able to list different emulators (like atomic for instance) and now youve explained why!
throw on an snes, sega mega drive and n64. and playstation if its emulated well (i have no idea if it is or not) and maybe whittle down your mame list a little ;)
whether or not any console games will be good with a trackball is another matter of course...

NBA Jam - EXTREMELY quiet sound.
For NBA Jam you need to enter service mode and adjust the master volume upwards. For some reason the factory default has it really, really quiet.

Shuffleshot and Shuuz is fun also.
Xam
^^ Both of these are great 4 player alternate party games (love the beer round in Shuuz) if you have a trackball.
There's a couple dart games out there and pool that are alternating turns. For something different, there are the quiz games and 3PL wheel of fortune (if that's your thing).
-
What version of MAME are you using and which set of roms are you using?

Golden Tee 2K (99 has a vertical layout on my machine??)
Can you take a picture of that? That's not right.

I have tiger woods 2002 or 2004, one of those, it plays very well with a track ball if you want to stick with a golf game and get some more courses.
I have mine set up with a 21" monitor, not sure how it would look ported through S video to a TV. I would start with a Tiger Woods one that is a few years old, you should be able to find it at a good price to test with.
-
does tiger woods run in a low VGA resolution? I'm limited to 640x480 on my MAME cab..of course I lack a trackball right now too.
Track and Field is awesome, well except the hammer throw :p
-
Yes, we played a lot of "Track and Field".
I have many of the "You Dont Know Jack (YDKJ)" PC games installed on my cabinet. Those are great for parties. Although most questions are multiple choice (ie: entering A,B,C,D), you will need a keyboard to answer a few questions (ie: gibberish questions ...... I am horrible at these questions).
-
Oh man in college, I'd say 1996-97, You Don't Know Jack was the huge technological feat on the web... it was like a really good shockwave game years before shockwave was out there. Bunches of us would get sloppy and play that over and over again.

interesting... noob question in 3.2.1. how do I get into service mode?

We like these games, but we have a hard time in Shuuz. I dont know if its just we need to tweak the sensitivity of the trackball or what, but none of us can play with any skill. We usually blast past the pin, or are way too short.
I picked up Tiger Woods 2002 at a garage sale for a dollar. I hope it works well with S-video on a TV. I do have an ATI card with the catalyst control center which has a lot of tweaks for TV display, and I have read that it is really the only way to get good picture out of Svid/TV. I also did a bit of searching on emulation. Seems they finally emulated PS2 well. I think this will be the best way to get what we are looking for. I never even thought of it! I just dont know how to get my games into r0m files, or know where to go get them

:) I think it's F2 although I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
That's true of most any MAME game, by the way.

Puzzle Bobble is the game I set my JAMMA machine to for every party.
It's a hit with all ages, and both sexes.
It's cool to see Grandma waiting in line for a shot at your friend's 7 year old son.
-
Bang Bead is one of my favorite games to play with friends. The title is a bit strange but it's like an updated PONG game with selectable characters. For baseball, Super World Stadium '99 is great!

Can someone help me here??? I have gone into service mode on both NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, but I cannot find the master volume control anywhere!!!???
I'm using MAME32 v.109
Thanks....

Nobody mentioned yet that there are actually 3 versions of GT. GT Classic plays the same as 97 and 2K but with 3 additional courses.

N64 and Playstation are both emulated well these days...
N64 - http://www.pj64-emu.com/
Playstation - http://www.epsxe.com
I've got both running on my cabinet, however, I'm having trouble finding a good Turbographx16 emulator. Any help?

Shuffleshot is a huge hit at my place with the guys. The difference between Shuffleshot and the other 4 player alternating player games you mentioned is with Shuffleshot your actually playing head to head instead of just you against the lanes or course. You can either go for points, or try to knock the other players puck off. There are a 3 different variants of shuffleboard. It's a blast.

It's not the game, it's the competition. Pick a different type of game than what your buddies usually play and set up a tournament or simply put up a prize for the high score on the night. Put up a whiteboard or something to keep track of scores and watch the smack talking begin. It brings out our competetive nature and one-upmanship.
