Post by: Malenko on July 08, 2007, 02:32:19 pm
chopped it, tagged it, bagged it. Allegedly, I'll get a picture sent to me of the kid who got my hair :)

Niiice... they have a group not far from here.  My hair has been annoying me lately and I've been tempted to chop it off... give it to them.  Mine is probably a bit longer than yours was right now.  Yours is a good color for a little girl having a very rough time of it.  Nice job.

Very cool.

My 12 year old Niece has grown hers out and chopped it off for locksoflove twice now.

I've been growing my hair out for almost 7 years now, unfortunately, I think giving a kid a new 'do with gray streaked through it might not be such a nice thing to do. If it ever comes off, though I'll definitely look into donating.

Can they dye it?

Good question. I must read the FAQ.

My wife did the Locks of Love about 6-7 years ago. I liked her with short hair, but she didn't. Congrats on doing that though!

BTW: Dude, you look just like Axl Rose!!  ;D

Yeah, my wife donated some hair to them last year. I'm trying to grow mine out now. It is thinning up front and top so I have to grow a "mullet".

Good job!

Is Locks of Love a legit organization, or one of those scam ones? I ask, because there was an expose study not too long ago that showed most charities that take in hair sell the vast majority to wig companies for a profit, and only use a small fraction as a token donation.

EDIT: Hmm, it does say on their site that any hair less than 10 inches in length will be sold for profit...

When my wife looked into it, they wouldn't even let you donate if you had less than 10" to give. And from all that I have heard, Locks of Love is legit.

A company can be a charity, by law, if they donate a certain minimum percentage of their profits to charity and document it for tax puposes.  They are not nonprofits, obviously, but the percentage can be as low as like 10-15% I think in some states.  There are quite a few in MA of those "we'll take your junk cars for charity" companies that if you look into them are really scrap operations that donate a little to the United Way or something like that.  There is one by my house that really goes to effort to hide the profit part, too, and only takes running cars, boats, etc.  They do a huge business.

I hope you aren't as cynical around your kids as you are here. My dad was a cynical bastard and it has taken years to get to where I don't think everything is "rigged", or "trying to screw the white man".  ::)

locks of love is legit, have been around for about 10 years now. Any and all sales from hair under 10 inches in length are used to cover the cost of the production of the prostheses. They even post the scan of their 990 form on line

I get no  compensation for donating my hair (I dont even think I get a tax write off) but it feels good to selflessly help children especially those in the unique situation that they are in.

dyed hair is accepted, bleached hair is not.  they have a fairly detailed FAQ online about whats accepted.

I never said Locks of Love is not legit and in fact did say I had been considering donating my hair to them.

Locks of Love always reminds me of this (mostly irrelevant) high school story.  Feel free to skip.

Each year, the town's Rotary Club gives out four scholarships.  One senior is chosen for a small amount of cash from each of the three high schools (town high school, town Catholic high school, and regional vocational high school).  Then, one of those three receives a second larger scholarship after "Rotary Meet and Greet Night" - dinner with the Rotary Club, each school's principal talks about their candidate, and each student answers questions in an open forum about their interests and plans.  For my year of graduation, I was the candidate from our high school.  The Catholic HS candidate skipped the Meet and Greet for a basketball game, which didn't go over too well.  The vocational candidate was this girl Emily who I knew from middle school.  We were friends for a while and I refused to take her virginity, which she was desperately trying to give away for some reason.  We remained friends for a short while until she started telling mutual friends that I wasn't interested in girls since I wouldn't touch her.  So one morning during English class while our substitute teacher was out of the room, I announced that Emily had finally lost her virginity - to her cousin (true story, she told me herself in confidence).  She very much so hated me after that.

Anyway, here we are at this Rotary scholarship thing essentially competing against each other.  My principal talks me up, then I get to stand on stage and chat with the eldery Rotary Club folks.  One old woman didn't have a question, but wanted to compliment me on my nice hair (which was/is about 2 feet long).  Aw, how sweet of her.  Everyone has a good chuckle about that, things go fine overall, and I sit.  Next up is Emily and her principal.  The FIRST thing out of her principal's mouth is "Emily asked me not to mention this, but I just HAVE to!  This very afternoon, Emily went to her hairdresser and got her waist-long hair cut off to donate to Locks of Love!  *Looks directly at me* Emily is ALWAYS thinking of charity before herself!"

I began to rise from my seat, ready to point at her and yell "Yeah, but she's a COUSIN F'er!", but I stayed quiet.  For the better, apparently, since even her new butch haircut couldn't save her from bumbling questions about wanting to go to beauty school and I wound up with the scholarship.  Every time I see or hear "Locks of Love", I feel compelled to retell this story.  Sorry

Yeah, most chain places will cut it for them for free.

I have stopped just a few months shy of having a decent foot to cut off for them several times now. Mine always gets all tangly once it gets about a foot long.

Well you got a free haircut, didn't you? ;) ;D

You're supposed to tie it up when you drive your home away.

Welcome back, Paige.   ;D

My wife had hair all the way down to the small of her back. She chopped it to just above the shoulders and donated it. Now it's getting long again and she has to decide what to do.

I did the L.O.L. a few years ago, some places are picky about giving the free hair cut, most will only cut it and do no kind of styling, not that I'm complaining...

I didn't get any kind of picture or anything like that, just the free haircut.
Anything free before a wedding is going to help.  ;D

I wanted to do it again this year, but this summer has been too hot and Im really debating chopping it off soon since its just a bit longer than shoulder...

-mal

theres a list of the free cut places on their site IIRC

That's pretty lame, considering everyone else in the process is donating their time to give a cancer kid some dignity.

I've donated twice.  My hair grows ridiculously fast and in a year's time, I can have 16 inches to donate, easy.  So I did, twice.  They sent me this little certificate, nothing fancy, just a nice acknowledgment for what I did.
