Title: What gets in to people?
Post by: RTSDaddy2 on July 02, 2007, 06:49:14 pm
Well, I have officially learned today that I am NOT a techie.

There is a report that some people opened up, and managed to break, their new $400 to $500 iPhone, just to see what makes the sucker tick.

My wife would absolutely leave me in a heartbeat if I did something like that, if she didn't kill me first.  Apparently none of these people have families they have to take care of.  Sorry, you'll never make me understand this one, so don't hand me "they can afford it" as an excuse.  This is just silly.

Well I guess they didn't set out to break it. Personally I don't open a device unless it's broken or obsolete, but I have to admit it's fun to open them up.

Personally I don't see the deal about the iPhone.

Hi is this any different than most of us spending $500, $1000, $2000 to build an arcade machine when you can buy an X-box or Wii for much cheaper?

With great risk comes great reward...

They may be "Seeing what it takes to make it tick" or they could be doing any number of other things. For example:

Just about anytime a new device comes out, there is a race to open the device or format. Look at DVD John. There is a certain amount of fame/notoriety attached to this. You may not understand how someone could break a $500 device, but I personally can't understand how someone can waste money on cigarettes, beer, or motorcycles. Thats my opinion and I respect other peoples hobbies to know that what they do for fun is their own business.

One last thing... If my wife wanted to leave me over a broken $500 device - I'd hold the door open for her and kick her ass down the steps.

also at least one of the groups that did it, were doing it to get a detailed picture of the cost to manufacturer it. they look at every single component to do that.

apparently one guy smashed one with a hammer on youtube. THAT, i must admit is stupid...

Sounds like a rock solid relationship there.

But hey, some of us can afford it. If I bought something worth $500 and broke it, I wouldn't be happy, but wouldn't care all that much either. $500 isn't some massive crazy amount of money to some of us.

Yeah I saw those stories too...crazy people.  Although some of those folks did it for business reasons.  Some company is making a break down of what exactly is in there and how much the parts are worth...that I can understand...but just destroying a $600 device 'just because'...crazy.

I just can't wait for people to start writing virus for the iPhone...that'll be great.

I have to agree that it's crazy to open up something that expensive and risk breaking it, but what's even more crazy is that your wife would actually leave you if you did it.   :laugh2:

What does she do to you when you leave the toilet seat up?

People who do that are doing it in the reverse engineering process.  When you set out to reverse engineer something, especially something miniature, it is known ahead of time you're going to break one.  Often times you break several, but in the process, with each one you get just a little bit further than the last time.  Only the serious experts (we're talking EE PhD candidates) can get away with not breaking any.  The guy who cracked the Xbox break any, I believe, but the hardware format on the Xbox was very easy, it was the security method that was hard.  There are a number of really really good books on the subject.  I really liked this one (http://www.amazon.com/Hacking-Xbox-Introduction-Reverse-Engineering/dp/1593270291/ref=sr_1_1/103-6724610-4158234?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183467474&sr=8-1).

I don't frown on the average guy breakin open his iPhone to hack it...just spending $600 to get one the very first day to break it is a little on the edge...I mean it isn't like you couldn't wait a week or two and then buy a couple really cheap ones on ebay that were busted up by some one else.  Or wait till they don't cost as much as a full sized desktop computer.

I'm just saying if you got $600 to blow...I have dreams of building more cabs.  Pass the money my way....I'll send you pictures.

I've broken things opening them up.  Not always cheap things.  I can almost always fix what I broke but I've had my share of "oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, that just snapped off" moments inside something I didn't intend to break.

Also....

I'm sure some game PCB's were broke in figuring out how to dump the roms.

Doesn't anybody on this forum have a sense of humor anymore??  Good god.  At least I could have counted on Drew and some of the old guard for a snappy comeback about the wife comment.

Thanks to CCM for seeing the tongue that was firmly planted in cheek on my comment and responding in kind!  As to your question, so far I just get a tongue lashing and that's about it.

Uh, yeah, sure.

And are we really sure that its RTSDaddy2 that's getting the tongue lashing?  Isn't that what we're supposed to be doing when we upset our wives?

No, no they don't.  I've been around here a loooong time.  Aside from me, the only people with a sense of humor have a bad sense of humor.

I mean what's wrong with you?  This isn't some crazy hippie forum about world politics, we are trying to play 25+ year old kids games!  That's serious work!  ;)

Touche Howard.  I know, it needs one of those funny little squiggles over the e, but I couldn't figure out how to do that.   ;D

Hitler had a better sense of humor than you.  Then again, he was more modest than you are Howard

Yep, that's funny.  I recently played with an iPhone in an Apple store and wow it is really cool, not cool enough for me to drop hundreds of dollars on one (yet, particularly since it's only ATT for now) but cool none the less.  I still thought that was funny.  I am sure that some happy iPhone owners have accidentally destroyed several iPhones by now, and what was the gain from all those accidents?... Nothing, the blender however probably inspired laughter from thousands people, way more value than the fools who flushed, ran over, or lost their iPhones.

Was that fake, or can that blender really do that to metal???

The blender will really do that-they have all sorts of crazy stuff that they've blended on that site.

Plus I bet the iPhone barely qualifies as metal.

What's more crazy... people bidding over $1000 for the the iPowder.... the blended iPhone is on salve via eBay: see auction here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-iPhone-and-Blendtec-Total-Blender_W0QQitemZ170129995323QQihZ007QQcategoryZ64355QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).
So people are willing to pay more than the price for a iPhone because it is reduced to powder?  ???
(okay they will receive a $400 blender with it, but still - paying $600 for powder...)

But Dude! It's iPowder. It's gotta be millions of times more powerful than pixie dust. I hear if you snort some, you'll have visions of the next Mac World keynote given by Steve Jobs. That's gotta be worth something.  ;D
