Title: Mame32 not playing nice with vertical monitor
Post by: chadandjody on July 01, 2007, 02:46:52 pm
I've got Mame32 installed on a PC with XP.  The monitor is turned vertical and the display settings are adjusted in XP so that it runs in vertical mode.  With older mame games (for example, games like Galaxian, Ms. Pac Man, etc), Mame32 freezes when I try to exit the game.  The only way to get out of it is ctrl-alt delete.  Newer games don't seem to have that problem.  Anyone seen this before and know of a fix?

Hard to say.  I'm running the same setup and have no issues with the verticals you mention.  What version of Mame32 are you using?

Is this PC used in a cab?  Do you use anything on it other than Mame?  Just curious, because if you don't, then I would set the video card back to standard oreintation, and just let Mame turn the games only.  Are you running a front-end?

What's your standard desktop resolution?

Also, is your color depth set at 16 bit?  That might help, give it a try.

I'm at work now but I'm pretty sure it's the latest version of Mame32 out there.  It is just a standard XP machine being used in a cabinet with nothing else special installed.
I have set the video card back to standard orientation and can run/exit the games with no problems at all.  I haven't tried setting Mame to flip the orientation (instead of using XP to change the orientation)of the games only because I know that's not a setup I'll be happy with .

I did try setting the color depth to 16-bit instead of 32-bit but no change.  Also tried all the different desktop resolutions, updating video card driver, and tinkering with the various Mame32 video options.

I've always used Mame32 and not regular Mame or any front ends.  Wonder if maybe trying one of those would make a difference?

Do you use this for anything other than gaming?

If it's only for games, then use a front-end, and have mame32 orient the games vertically.

You mention thats not a set-up you be happy with, why?  Only if you are using the PC for more than games.

I'm running Atomic FE with Mame32, games set through Mame32 to run correct orientation with 75% vertical scanlines.  I never see the desktop, nor do i have a need at this point.  It's a dedicated cab, and Atomic loads when I boot up - running Pac-Man.

Food for thought at any rate.
