I'm looking for a GOOD piano hinge. I just back from Ace Hardware, and they're really flimsy. I've got a hinge on my Moon Patrol cab that's really sturdy, but it's in use.
I've searched, and found that Home Depot carries them, but are they any good? The nearest HD is about 70m from here, so I don't want to waste a trip.
-
I'm from NYC and the HD does carry like 2 types...
the heavy duty one (gold color) is pretty good...
-
I bought one that would classify as flimsy .. but once I mounted it it was solid. I would not worry about it.
I also couldn't find one the right length, so I used my dremmel to cut a few inches off of one from Lowes.

70 meters isn't bad. I'd just head over to Home Depot and check them out :P

That's 70 MILES, not meters. 70 meters would be across the street.
Perhaps I'll try True Value. They seem to have more, better stuff. Ace is a convenience factor, they're within walking distance.

haaa haaa haaa... hack a grand piano for the piano hinge ??...
real funny...
I bet since you got the hinge... you don't need to close the piano anyway....
that cover piece could be a REAL NICE and SMOOTH control panel for you to drill holes..... SILKY SMOOTH !!!...
lol....
and its long enough for a 4 player panel too !!... lol....
haaa haa ahaa haaa....
;) ;) ;)

They look flimsy but they're strong as hell. A friend of mine and I built an English phone booth and the piano hinge was easily strong enough to hold on the door with a full pane of thick glass and iron work. Trust me, the hinge hold fast!! ;)

I was hoping to get a hinge like the one on my Moon Patrol cabinet. The metal is really thick, and it's made for carriage bolts.
These are nice, but not what I'm looking for.

Bah i just installed my piano hing today.
No flimsy.
All good.I am kinda sad because I only found the golden looking one :-\.
everything else is silver(locks, coin door locks).
Oh well :P
-
hi snaaake... actually... HD does have silver ones....
you just have to keep looking...
(or maybe they sold out...)
-
I used a bunch of the silver ones from HD, if you use a screw in each hole they are REALLY strong. I'd recommed them since they are relatively cheap - can you get them shipped to you since you live 70 miles away?

I need not bother with Home Depot, as both hardware stores here carry this brand. This was the flimsy hinge I was talking about. I was looking for something tougher. Something I can secure with carriage bolts (I like the way they look)

obviously go with what you want - but just don't think the HD piano hinges are flimsy. Just because they are flexible when they aren't attached to anything doesn't mean they won't work tremendously well. Any one else have any comments on this?
-
If Home Depot is only 70 meters away why don't you just buy one and if it's too flimsy you can take it back?

I already told you it's MILES, not METERS! Read back a few posts!

Miles Davis?

I'm just kidding Peale. I knew you meant miles to begin with. That's what the :P was for...

Sure I have comment..works great. :)
NO idea where this *flimsy* came from... :P
hyiu:Yes I know home depot has silver once but I am too lucky >:(.
EVERY time I go down there they dont have what I want.
Like the other day...needed 2 1/2 wheels, they didnt have em.
Too weird :-[...its like they know what I want and hides the stuff till I leave the store....LOL !

My flimsy comments are based on how I can flex the hinge before it's attached to anything. The hinge I do have only allows for a slight bit of flex. Of course, it's made from 14G steel.
That's what I'm looking for; does anyone have a source? If not, I guess my hands are tied.

I was searching on the internet for high quality outdoor piano hinge once for an architectual application (casement windows).
I can't remember anything about the name of the company, but they sell military grade piano hinges -- they actually supply military contractors with hinges for tanks and ships.
Google is your friend ;-)

Just wanted to update, RandyT gave me this website: http://www.mcmaster.com/ and they've got really heavy duty piano hinges on their site.
RandyT was complaining about the high shipping amounts, but I think that was due to the unusual size of the package. Something really skinny, but six feet long, would constitute an ususually sized package.
