Title: Happ trackball pin out? My bad, Imperial, is the one that I need.
Post by: Hawk Daddy on June 29, 2007, 12:18:19 am
So what is the standard trackball pinout for a happ trackball?  LIke the y-dir, y-clk, x-dir, and x-clk, and the grounds?

Not a pinout, but a "wire-out" at least:

 Left/Right                                                   Up/Down
1) Output - A  (Blue Wire)                         1) Output - A  (Green Wire)
2) +5V           (Red Wire)                            2) +5V            (Red Wire)
3) GND         (Black Wire)                          3) GND          (Black Wire)
4) Output - B (Yellow Wire)                        4) Output - B (Orange Wire)

The six pins should corelate to the 4 signals plus +5V and Ground (being split to the 2 optic boards)

And here's the pin numbers:

PIN WIRE #1 – Black 1 Yellow + 12 Volts DC
PIN WIRE #1 - Red PIN WIRE #2 – Red 2 Black Ground
PIN WIRE #2 - Yellow PIN WIRE #3 – Yellow 3 Red + 5 Volts DC
PIN WIRE #3 - Green PIN WIRE #4 – Green 4 Black Ground
PIN WIRE #5 - Blue PIN WIRE #5 – Blue
PIN WIRE #4 - Purple PIN WIRE #6 – Purple

Hope that makes sense.

LIke the y-dir, y-clk, x-dir, and x-clk...

FWI, the TB outputs a quadrature signal, not a direction & amount like in the question.  IOW, "Output A" in Stobe's answer is one of the two sensors for that axis and Output B is the other sensor, and each channel outputs whether the sensor is seeing a gap or not.  The Optipac, Optiwiz, or hacked mouse board these are connected to is what converts the quadrature signal to amount (and direction) and sends that to the computer.

Well it's not going to a computer, its going to a multiboard.  Thats why I was asking. And the manual that came with the board has those as what wires it needs to be.

I am interested in finding out this info as well...I am going to hook a centipede TB to a multiboard...the multigame board uses the JAMMA harness.  How do I hook it up...am I going to need to get an Optipac or something or can I wire the TB directly to the JAMMA harness?

From my understanding it's not going to need any type of converter, it should just hook straight up to it.  I just have to figure out the correct way to hook it it, I plan on messing with it tonight, hooked to a computer monitor.  I'll post my results.

Looks like These Wico's use pretty much the opposite of Happ's pinouts. (http://www.wicothesource.com/new2/pages/page89.htm) Those aren't the standard Wico/Imperials that you commonly see, though. I'm almost positive that they use the same pinout on the optical boards as Happ/Atari.

BTW, anyone else think it's odd that Wico's webpage is up still?

You could always go  THIS ROUTE. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Imperial-Trackball-Wire-Harness-NOS_W0QQitemZ300097738137QQihZ020QQcategoryZ13718QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem)

As far as wiring it to the harness goes, it's hard to say. Some JAMMA games used player 1's up,down, right, and left pins for trackball input, most had a seperate connector on the game PCB for it. Reading the game manual is probably the only way to tell. I'm still not sure how to connect the trackball to my Simpsons Bowling PCB since I can't find a manual or anyone that knows.

Here is some color info for the pinouts on the wico/imperial trackball that I hacked about 5 years ago.

The multigame boards accept trackball input through the Player 2 wires of the JAMMA harness.  4 wires - 2 for X and 2 for Y....plus I assume the TB has to be hooked up to a +5V and ground.

I've got the part that connects to the optic boards, I need the pinout for the connector, because thats where I have to hook up the new stuff, I've got the ground down, thats the easy part, it's universally black, most of the time.

Go with BobA's color coding and you'll have it.

I'll add that some trackballs use purple in place of the brown, but the pinout on the connector is the same, at least with every Happ, Wico, and Betson/Imperial trackball I've dealt with so far.  Also later Atari units, but not the older ones like the giant Missile Command / Atari Football type balls.  GGG Electric Ice balls should match as well, I dunno about the Ultimarc unit as I've never had one.

Is H=Y, and V=X or is it the other way around?

When I made up the drawing my ref was H=Horiz=X and V=Vert=Y
