I would like to create a section of my website where there are various links to categories of images. As many of you know, I just got back from France and not only did I take a lot of pictures, but I was with quite a few other students who also got some great shots. I want to put a link on my website for each student and when you click the link, have all of their pictures accessible, preferably thumbnails that can be clicked on for the full-size picture.
But there are way too many pictures to set this up individually, so I'm hoping that there is web software available that will allow me to just dump all the pictures in a directory and the software will pick it up and display the thumbnails. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Free would be a plus. :)

Take a peek at what Joymonkey has here (http://artwork.joymonkey.com/). Not sure if he set that up himself or if it's a paid host but the software sounds like what you want.

I've been wanting to try out Menalto Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/) to use personally. Seems to be the hot gallery opensource software of the moment.
For clients I mostly used the galleries built into software like Nuke and Joomla. If you don't need a portal that's overkill though.
Indeed how was France? maybe more important: parlez vous Français?

If you have it, Photoshop creates galleries from a directory of images with only a few clicks.

I was gonna suggest that. Photoshop's batch gallery maker. Lots of different templates too.
Now if you want it truly AUTOMATED on the server, there's PHP solutions like Coppermine, etc. Just search www.hotscripts.com for a "gallery"

Yeah . . . sorry. I've only had a couple of seconds to get on these boards since I've been back. I returned to an absolute crisis with my network at work and my replacement was just drowning and overwhelmed. And pretty much every moment of my day that has not been taken up with work has been spent packing my life into boxes for my move across the country (starting my 40+hour drive to Miami this Friday). I'll write up a worthy report of France soon in its own thread.
Thanks for the tips, by the way. I'll check that software out, not to mention figure out what the process of installing software to my webserver consists of, since I'm just using a big web host (Powweb). Frankly, I feel a little foolish about this, but I haven't even checked with my web host to see if they already offer a solution for what I'm looking for.

I'd bet that if you want something installed on a host you have to have them do it... some hosts charge a small fee, some will just hand you a list of stuff they will install free for you as part of the contract. I doubt they will allow you to do it yourself.

There are plenty of solutions that involve nothing more than uploading files via FTP, then loading up the "installer" page in your browser. (Usually requires web hosting with PHP and MySQL)

I second the Menalto Gallery package, very easy to use once it's set up. You do need to download a couple of php packages if your host doesn't provide them, but it also has a couple of nice remote tools for file transfer so you can send a bunch of stuff without needing to use the web interface all the time.
Otherwise you could just use something like Irfanview to make a bunch of thumbs and have a php page that shows everything called thumb.* and links to the full image. No need for overkill if this is going to be a one-off thing.
