Title: BYO Wii/Zapper
Post by: Zero_Hour on June 25, 2007, 07:10:33 pm
Interesting hack for those that simply MUST have old school Zapper goodness for their Wii. Not sure how I would feel about strapping a Wiimote to my arm for long gaming sessions, but props to the guy who came up with this.

also they are coming out with a new duck hunt and a handle attachment where you slide the wiimote down the front and it clip locks in and makes the shape of a lite gun I seen sneek pictures of the set.

You aren't talking about this thing, are you?

It was only a prototype. As far as I know, the hardware was never spoken of again, and it most likely never will see the store shelves.

That was just some random shot of it I pulled up on google. There's no question as to whether or not it was real, it wasn't photoshoped or anything. It was a prototype that they had on display at E3 some time back (way before the Wii was available). I think that we would have heard something more about it by now if the project was still going on.

Here's the story from May 10th, 2006 (which includes mention of the new Duck Hunt game, which also hasn't been spoken of since):

Click Here (http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&maxrecordsreturned=300&frpp=50&from=R10&satitle=wii+gun&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=16403&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1)

Or spend some $20 for a regular attachment, I suggest the one that does not require the Nunchuck, the reason is for some games the nunchuck motion sensing will cause you to have to jerk your gun to do certain moves.

Those appear to be real, since they are apparently available elsewhere also. I had no idea that third parties had already developed a gun grip for the Wii. That's probably the best you're going to get anytime soon, since Nintendo doesn't seem interested in a first party version anymore (though, there's always the chance they'll prove me wrong). The only thing they're really lacking is a better interface into the controller, like how the official prototype had tapped into the joystick and put it under the thumb.

Those are real, the thing is.. putting the wiimote in a gun case doesn't make it magically as accurate at pointing as a lightgun.  Basically, that shell has some mechanical linkages inside it that press on the B triger of the wiimote when you pull the trigger.  Mind you it looks nice and would give more of a gun feel, but a real arcade shooter is slated to be released later this year and I suspect that a real lightgun might come with it.

And the Official Wii Zapper is announced. Pics on the link:

Looks funky, but could make for some interesting FPS action.

Yes I saw that this morning at the conference.  I'd like to say it's great, but in all honesty from looking at it it seems really really lame coming from nintendo.  Read what I said in the last post, putting a wiimote in a shell doesn't magically make it as accurate as a lightgun.  Now accuracy issues could be fixed via in-game calibration, but seeing as how the zapper games all have big cross-hairs on the screen, I'd say they won't do that.

With that being said, it's only 20 bucks and it comes with a game, so it's still not a bad deal, I just don't know how well it'll function.

Could be worse though, it could be the new official wii wheel.  When Reggie debuted that thing I almost fell to the floor laughing, you could hear crickets it was so quiet.

first picture looks like the 007 emblem after jaws bit into it arr lol.

definatly not the picture I was origanaly talking about and that appears to be even worse shapewise.

as long as it is a fixed base and angled correctly without the wiimote jiggling around it should be as accurate as the next beings the output ends would be the same.

I hate to ask, are you supposed to wear your wrist strap?

No... we've been saved from that thankfully.... a gtv video showed a developer demo-ing the gun and he didn't wear one (it fits inside the shell).

Dang, the prototype looked so much better than that one. Well, at least Nintendo has proved me wrong and followed through with the project. Hopefully the unannounced game they mention is the new Duck Hunt.

Hmm... the wrist strap is visible in all of the official images. It certainly doesn't look like it fits inside. Maybe he just didn't have one on it at the moment.

Saw the official Zapper with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.  It appeared to be pretty accurate.  I think the trigger on the foregrip is counter-intuitive and I'd prefer to either hold the nunchuck in the other hand or have it pistol-style like the earlier picture.

On a side-note, Umbrella Chonicles looks pretty, but appears to be boring as hell.  I hope they step the action up.  Even the original House of the Dead is more exciting from what I've seen of UC.
