Title: My New Neon Mame
Post by: solid187 on June 24, 2007, 08:24:33 pm
I want to give a very huge thanks to both Knievel (http://www.knievelkustoms.com/) and Dream Home Arcades (www.dreamhomearcades.com) for the inspiration, permission, and construction of my new machine.   Some notable differences include a 27" Makvision arcade monitor, working coin door, GGG electric ice buttons, curved marquee, and larger sideart.  Other than that, I wanted to keep it as close to Knievel's masterpiece as much as possible.

I applaud you for making it similar to knievels arcade. But then I also shun you for making it close to someone elses arcade.

Allow me to rephrase...

You did a good job of copying the cab. I just don't like that its a copy instead of an originally designed cab like most BYOACs member's cabs.

Un-shun

That cab looks sweet and I bet all your friends and family will think it is amazing.  Good for you.

Re-Shun
But a select group of internet dweebs everywhere will look down upon you for copying a master.

Un-Shun
I sometimes look down upon my own cabinet because I copied the art and stylings of a few BYOACers.

But damn it looks good.

Post a pic of YOUR cab and make sure it doesn't look like anyone else's.  What?  Your cab isn't done?

Then STFU!

Solid, that looks very nice.  That monitor looks great and the curved marquee is sweeeet!
Whats the little cab behind it?

Nah my cab isn't done. But why do you get so offended? He asked for our opinion and I told him mine. Am I supposed to just blab, "Good job guy!" for every little thing everyone does? Or are you saying that only those that have completed a cab are allowed to comment?

Besides, my cab is original in the sense that its being designed by me even though a lot of it is rip-off from various other cabs. Should I expect only good praise when its completely done? I doubt it.

Most of the cabs built are copies of other cabs - and those cabs are just copies of those big things they used to put in large rooms to entertain people for quarters.  My cab is a copy of Centipede.  I guess I should be ashamed of myself and go back to freelance Barn-Raising.   :dunno

Good job solid187!  I like it.  And the first thing you did was mention Knievel's influence so no harm in building a duplicate.  Enjoy!

whatever dude....EVERYONE copied off of Lusid.  you could congratulate him on a very nice copy of someone elses design.

btw....how bout you try to be a little more original with your sig, and not copy off of capcoms work.  geez.   :tool:

Beautiful looking cab.   All cabs have something in common but some look like S(*&)*()^ and others standout.  This one looks great and I would be proud to own it.

I think it was because too often people chime in from the peanut gallery about someone else's build and its lack of originality or monitor size or CP layout, without ever having built anything themselves.

I can think of a number of these folks (arcade82 comes to mind) and they tend to say that they are designing a totally original and wicked cab and, to date, I don't think any of them have built anything.

There is nothing wrong with copying from a master (particularly with appreciation and credit). At some point, I plan to build a copy of Knievel's woody and I have to presume that you will shun me too. It'll still look great.

At the end of the day, he has a nice cab than he can be proud of ... and I'm guessing that is one more cab than you have.

I love the curved marquee. I don't see many byoac'ers doing that.  In the end anyone who comes over to see it will think it's great no one will know anything about it not being original nor will anyone care. Mine is a Lusid cab with both Knievel art and CP... And you know what.. It's still awesome!Anyway great job!

There is no way any body has built any cab without taking something from someone else's cab. Atari and all of the game companies bought their competitors games to reverse engineer them to COPY THEM. And before that they did it to EM games and Pinball games and so on. It's called evolution. You take what came before you and add your own ideas to the soup. And someone will do the same to you. To truely come up with something totally original, no one would even know what it was...

By definition praise is only good. Negative praise doesn't exist. Furthermore, once you build your own cabinet, you'll most likely have an appreciation on what it takes to build a nice looking cabinet like this.

All cabinets are derived from the black monolith that the cavemen stared at in 2001, so ha! to everyone.

At the end of the day, I don't give a damn whether a cab is original or a copy of another cab. As long as the owner is happy with their cabinet, then everyone should be happy for them. Because honestly, every cabinet has controls, a monitor, and a marquee... just how original can you go?

My $0.02.

Solid, that's an awesome cab you made. And the curved marquee is something that traditionally you don't see, but lately you start to see more of them. I might just copy your curved marquee in my design.

And I love Knievel's cab. I've bought the neon rings for my cab too :P

Yes, definitely. I never told the guy that his cab stinks. Just said it was an almost exact copy of another cab. While that's not bad in itself since knievel's cab is one of the better designed cabs around, I'd just like to see people add their own style to a cab instead of just making an exact copy.

As for Hulkster, my sig is not a copy of Capcoms work. It is their work. I just converted the sprites into a gif. My sprite on my avatar is also from another game converted into a .gif

He did add his own style. The curved marquee is cool and look how big his sideart is.

Prior to having a wife and kids, I used to build my own machines.  I love, love, love to play the classic arcade games I grew up with (much more so than my PS3 or 360 games), and I had Dream Home Arcades build this machine for me as I no longer have the time or resources to do it myself.  Knievel was nice enough to share his creative design and artwork with me, and Dream Home Arcades did a great job building it.  They were very easy to work with and assembled everything in good time.  I plan on using Mamewah for the front end.  The monitor in the picture is actually damaged, but I have a new replacement on the way from Twisted Quarter.  It was not my intent to get in a converstation about orginality over this project...I only wanted to share my enthusiasm with the group.  Thank you much for all the kind words.

Awesome job!  I don't think there is anything wrong with copying someone else's work - probably because I've built two copies myself.  In fact, I will probably be building something "knievel-like" for my next cabinet!  Originality is great but there are so many awesome examples out there that there's really no need to reinvent the wheel, IMO.

I think it's cool whe people are able to recreate the better cabinets I've seen on here. Even with a family, I think you could have done this one yourself over time, but if ya got the money... ;) (I don't so my projects are all on the slow burner...the really slow burner)

Anyways, congrats on the awesome cabinet.

We were happy to build this machine for you.  We always welcome new challenges.  This machine was probably the most time consuming, difficult, frustrating, and all in all rewarding build yet!  Our hats off to the Knievel and his beautiful work.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who keeps the classic gaming world alive and well  :D

If you like this build check out our website at www.dreamhomearcades.com or call us at 715-212-8063 to discuss your ideas.

Have a great Day!

i was being sarcastic.  but my point was that just because he takes someone elses cool work and pays homage to it...doesnt mean its a cop out and unoriginal.  the capcom comment was just to make my point....he took someone elses work, changed it, and made it his own.  you took capcoms work and animated it and made it your own.  theres nothing wrong with liking something and then putting it in your sig/personality, or in his case building something that "looks" like it.

all that to say, next time either congratulate the guy on a sweet build and leave it at that....or dont post at all.

Um, no.

Apparently people take what I say too much at heart. I didn't make the comment to be an insult but apparently some saw it as such.

 :dunno

As for copying, I already have plans for the cab I will do after the one I am working on now. It will actually be a complete rip-off of the Donkey Kong cab. It's gonna be a present for my brother. He's always been a big Donkey Kong fan.  ;)

When I have it done and post pics, you can belittle me all you want if you feel retribution is neccessary.

Actually, I think that you will find that most people here will be considerate, will like what you have done and will say so.

Couldn't resist ::)

"..the curved marquee. I don't see many byoac'ers doing that..."

Got to mention Bombjack ..Curved, angled, twisted & built @ home :) - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=61679.msg663360#msg663360

Anyway, that's a good looking cab, no matter what. Yes, not necessarily BYOAC, but still good.

Just waiting for your next, homemade cab

All the best!

PS. efjayel, why wait? Post pics now while you're still planning/building/making mistakes & all with it ..we'd all appreciate that very much.

And, come on ..good luck with the build :=

I'll put up pictures of that mock CP eventually.
