This game makes no sense, just has no action. You run around bumping and kicking turtles. Blah. They did make up for this, though, with Super Mario Bros. You actually, like, do something.
-
The mario bros. bonus game in SMB3 for NES was pee your pants fun with 2 players. We would have wars to screw each other out of flowers. Goood times...
-
Sarcasm? Did I miss something?
I love screwing over the other player with the POW block when they're about to kick a turtle. Ok, it's funny once in a while. I think that the game is pretty dang awesome. I play it a ton on MAME with others.

Me too. We had a small selection of games in the day, but Mario Bros was one of them. We played it a lot. Get up to the challenging levels, slick ice, icicles, and the blackout stages...then it gets fun. Kill that red fireball a few times and see how pissed it gets. Awesome game with a two way (L,R) stick and one button.
FYI: If a game has Mario in it, it kicks ass by default...JEEZE! :soapbox:
-
Although my Mario Bros. cab is not working yet....I have to say that I didnt rank MB too high in the past. I had played the Atari 8-bit version plenty of times and never really got it.
Until I got my MAME cab and played it like it is supposed to be played: with 2 players !
This is, after Bubble Bobble and Joust, the most fun game to play with 2 players.....
-
Mario Bros. is only OK with a single player...but 2 player action rocks...
-
Maybe shorty can teach his sheep to play ... ;)
-
Maybe. I'll look into that...and that.

Troll
-
Your right
Eating white dots while being chased by ghosts makes much more sense
Or perhaps flying around on an ostrich and being chased by a pterodactyl makes more sense
The list goes on and on... the point is - the games were fun.
Who cares if Frogger can't swim?
-
I can see RayB is having more emotional problems, here. Most have just volunteered their opinions and ideas. I even obviously took them into consideration. I can't test it cos I haven't had anyone over to play that game (or any others).
lew: I went and thought about that. Pac-man was one in particular. The thing is, those games all have an projected goal that is obvious from the outset. Frogger is relatively linear. Pac-man is like completing a maze. Mario bros you just bump and kick until the game has decided it's put out enough turtles. And there's no background to it. Are you getting anybody home?...or saving somebody...or anything?

There are a ton of games that all you do is clear the board. Some of my favorites are:
Pengo
Joust
Galaga
I guess if you don't like Mario Bros. (and I love Mario Bros.) it might seem silly. It's not a big deal for someone to think I'm silly to like these games.

Not when we have so many other reasons to think that you're silly ... ;D

Man I loved Mario Bros.
I play the updated version
in Super Mario Advanced
for the GBA quite frequently.
I can remember turning over the score
on the old Atari 2600 version.
Guess I just have mad plumbing skills.
You know turtles are the leading cause
of drainage problems.
-
I've always thought this game was pretty decent. I guess I can see how someone would think it sucks if playing it alone, though. But there are a lot of games like that...

Yeah, I hate Pengo. But what I was getting at is, Pengo and each of those others you can see all the baddies, or whatever the game has, at the beginning and then work on them.
Another thing I forgot to mention is the movement: Mario and bro don't automatically move, but have to get up to speed. With a digital stick - and these cabs used regular digital sticks, didn't they? - this is quirky. Looking back, I remember this squarely. (Yes, Joust has something similar, but you can get over it by mostly hovering. Although, despite always liking the graphics and the idea, I'm only recently warming to this game.)
However, the two-player thing comes strongly back to mind. This was before fighters, and was perhaps a sort of proto-fighter effort by Nintendo to get more people involved, etc. Hm.

I think of it more as a "---fudgesicle--- you! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" type of game instead of a fighter. ;D

Mario almost always has to move in a direction for a few seconds to get up to speed. They used regular joysticks.
Shorthair - it's ok to say you suck at a game. It doesn't always have to be the games fault.
-
Oh, I think the movement is definitely a learning curve thing that I haven't climbed. But the game is still kinda blah by one's self. (I remember initially seeing the graphics and thinking "cool", but was non-plussed by the game play. It seemed really 'closed'.) I can see two people really being better. Still, I'd hack the game given the chance.
-
I remember as a kid when I first had a NES, before Super Mario Bros was the pack-in game (mine had Gyromite and Duck Hunt). For a birthday or something I asked for Super Mario Bros, and ended up with Mario Bros. It was kind of disappointing, but I didn't let on, and learned to like that game. Now, not so much. I think I overdosed on it early on, and now find it to be pretty boring.
So, in a roundabout way, I sort of agree with shorthair, which terrifies me.
-

Now I can agree with you on a couple points, because you actually backed up your opinion. Yes Mario Bros doesn't have a clear goal. It's still fun, but maybe they should have added a bit more structure like a turtle counter or something.
Your original posted though was worded in a way that was more just bashing the game for no reason.
-
I had a chance a while back to pick up a original mario bros cab...I just don't get that nostalgic feeling with that game like I do with pac-man, Galaga, and all the others I played as a kid.
That said, My daughter just got super mario world for her gameboy and it also has a version of Mario Bros...well it is pretty fun. I think it was mentioned in an earlier post, Not a bad time waster...
-
RayB: well, whether I was just bashing the game, I think that's not a big deal compared to bashing people for liking it, which I wasn't doing. I can understand that people find some things personal, though.
Contrary to what people may think, I don't just try something and then forever think it's ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Since having Mame I've actually come back to Mario Bros a few times. I'll go back again, and would like to with another person playing. Yes, I was expressing my frustration with the game, but I don't think this game is an archetypal one, either. It's sorta pre-Mario.
-
Presumably Frogger does. It must be quite embarrassing at family reunions.
Who cares if Frogger can't swim?
-
Mario Bros does have some kick-butt bass sound fx though... When that fireball comes out... RRRR!!
-
Ok Shorthair...
I'm going to give you 1 more chance. If you feel that Mario Bros. is a masterpiece and the best game that ever graced the arcade say nothing else and we'll know that you regret thinking Mario Bros. is lame.

That was the joke doing a flyby over your head. ;D

i get the joke, i was just wonderng if he was banned before he made the joke, or if he was banned to make the joke funny,
also what DID he get banned for then?
-
People only get banned around here for saying very bad things, and usually it takes quite a few incidents to get to that point. It is not a joking matter, and contrary to what you may think, Saint does not throw his weight around and is a VERY, VERY forgiving board admin.
-
yea i relaise that he just seemed like a active member and ive been thru his previous posts and cant find any evidence why, unless saint removed it all.

They were removed.
Besides - while Saint is a very forgiving site admin, he has the right to ban anyone he wants from the site. I'm not sure why you would take up any kind of cause here, but let it die. From what I can tell, shorthair added nothing to the community and we are better off without him. I only wish he was never allowed to rejoin the site after his last banning.
-
Also note that his title had "Probation" in it, and I saw some of the posts he was making even WITH that tag before they were deleted..
-

I disagree. He added something. I just can't quite find the words to properly summarize what.

Mario brothers is a true classic. It's definitely a top-10 classic game to me. I remember playing it at the roller skating rink (remember those?) in gradeschool, and of course on the NES. Simple but challenging, and a sweet looking cabinet and artwork! I was really happy to finally get a dedicated widebody version recently.

You gotta love the slight movement delay when your trying to avoid death on the slipice levels.
-
It's also the only way to jump directly on top of the POW button from the bottom platform. Very useful to good players. My brother and I used to "KO" that game all the time on a single quarter (the level number changes to "KO" after level 25 I believe).
-
mario bros 2 player is a blast :applaud:
-
Got mine working and I love it. It's really true: nothing beats the original. Yes MAME comes very close, but those analogue sounds are just kicking ! :)
I suck on it though, haven't reached further than the slipice levels ....damn, this means delay on the restore, hadn't expected the PCB to work straight away ! :D
-
I haven't even got to the ice levels yet... :dunno Just cause I like the game doesn't mean I'm good at it!

Yeah, the running sounds are totally off in the latest MAME. They used to be much better. Part of the discrete audio rewrites I guess.

Kill that red fireball a few times and see how pissed it gets.
how do you kill the red fireball...?

how do you kill the red fireball...?
from underneath....just as it makes contact with a girder....you jump. Nets you 1000 points, 2000 for the 2nd, 3000 for the 3rd....etc, etc.
Just be warned that it gets very angry!
-
I like the idea of the gameplay, but the controls work very oldfashioned. If you jump left-up, you cannot correct the jump direction while jumping like in Super Mario Bros and other later platform games. This really demands knowledge of al jumping trajectories and leaves no room for correcting mistakes.
-
Apparently Mario and Luigi took the money they made from clearing out the mutants from the pipes (being plumbers and all)
and got a Steve Austin bionic makeover. It always messes with me when I play one of the later games, then play DK and 'what? Mario died after a 1/2inch fall? Oh yeah..'
In my opine, DK3 is the 'what the #$* were they thinking?' game. Disinfect Kong's nether regions as a game?
Poor old Rodney the bug killer didn't quite do as good as Mario as a franchise..
That said, I have a DK3 bezel I'd be glad to trade for a DK jr. one. ;D

Has Rodley, I mean, Stadney ever made a cameo in any other games?

The wide body Mario Bros is a sweet cab. If I had more space, I would definitely look at picking one up. I do prefer the gameplay of SMB over the original, but Mario Bros is a fun game in its own right.
-
Regarding 2-player, this thread woke up an old memory. When this game originally appeared in the arcade we viewed it strictly as a two player game. I and my friends didn't even consider playing it as one player, but only in pairs. Never went near it when I was alone.
On the MAME cab today for my daughter and I, this is probably our second favorite 2-player game (after Bubble Bobble).
