Title: Midway 49 way vs. U360's vs. p360
Post by: gatordad on June 22, 2007, 03:26:01 pm
I am starting to gather misc. parts for my cp and was wondering if anyone who has used both or one of these would give their opinion on which is preferred and your reasons for it.

I recently acquired an empty Midway blitz cab, it has a four player cp with all four optical 49way joysticks in excellent condition.

Before I got these (49ways) I was almost positive I was going to purchase 2 u360's and a single dedicated restricted 4 way for my cp.

I have read the reviews at retroblast, and I am not quite sure what the real difference between the u360's and the 49 way besides the u360's having a 9 by 9 grid and the 49 way having a 7 by 7.

I know, that Randy is close to introducing his sticks, but I have these in my possession already, I might consider selling them if there is a compelling reason to do so.

What would you guys do?

Regards
Gatordad

You already have the 49-ways, and since you have the whole cabinet, you also have the 49-way wiring harnesses. You can get 4 of Randy's gpwiz49 eco's and be set in no time. As a bonus, you can get the pc version of Blitz and play 4p blitz comparable to the original. ;D

I guess what I am saying is go ahead with the 49-ways.

I have some of the same sticks and I like them.  I can't tell the difference between the M49 or a Happ Competition when I play Robotron.  The player 1 stick is the M49 and the Competition for player 2.  4-way mode is excellent as well unless you like the restricted feel.  I use Randy's GPWiz49 boards and can't wait for the new version to be released.

I agree with all of the above, I love my m49's and though they feel looser than some of the others out there, already having them and the wiring harness makes it an easy decision in my book :-)

The U360s are a true analog stick.
The 9x9 mapping is just the analog-to-digital conversion of the data received from the stick.
This means that you can play analog games with it, in addition to everything you can play with the 49-ways.

As he said, U360's are analog.  If you aren't really worried about having perfect support for analog games, keep your 49's.  Two gpwiz49's will run you $40 while two U360's will run you $120.  Software wise, they operate very similarly, switching with software to 8,4,2,49, or whatever game you are playing.

I have two 49's, they feel great.  Got them on ebay out of an old blitz cab.

Didn't someone ask exactly the same question some weeks ago?

So what?

Regarding the U360s, being able to upload maps from a frontend is a definite plus.  Though I can see that if you already have the 49s, you would want to stick with them.

I meant it seemed like it was the same person asking the question, and not necessarily the same people answered but the same answers were given.

Well i had a set of 49 for my CP, and thought they were terrible, they didnt feel right for most games, and forget about em for beat em up's such as street fighter, so i ditched em and got a pair of Happ Competition! After all i decided that most games that supported the 49 i didnt play that much. Just my 2 pence worth

On a side not what are the list of games that use a 49-way stick?

I would also like to know the answer to this and also a list of analog games,
I checked maws, http://www.mameworld.net/maws/ is there anywhere else to look for the information?

Thanks for the input guys, I believe that I will use the 49ways in my first cp build and if I don't like them they could always be replaced. Its only money right...

I asked a similiar question a few weeks ago. Except I have the Williams49 ways. After talking w/ Randy T at GGG I decided to use the williams49 which came w/ my cab along w/ (2) GPWIZ49 ecos. I considered the U360s and P360s but that is the route I took since I already had the sticks plus due to CP space I did not want to go with a dedicated 4 way.

Try controls.dat (http://fe.donkeyfly.com/controls/controls.php).  It has a lot more detailed list of inputs than mame does.  The list does not cover every game, however.

OTOH, games that used 49-ways that's not in the list, don't worry about them.  Mame doesn't include emulation of the 49-ways (these games have dipswitches to play with 8-ways and that's all mame emulates ATM), nor will they play well on today's computers (Blitz, Gauntlet Legends, ect).

There's a dandy list in the BYOAC Wiki:
