Goshdarnit, why did it have to be on steam?
Oh, well... Grid Wars will do.
EDIT: edited for content.
-
Yeah, they just lost my $2.50 too. :laugh2:
-
Just found out you can buy from msn games for $4.00

Edit: I remembered you don't have to use the steam launcher for it either, just go into your steam directory and find geometry wars and it has an exe you can create a shorcut to. That's what I did so I could put it in my front end and not have to use the evil long loading steam launcher.
-
Only works under bloated Windows Vista? Bah!
-
I know some kids that visit this site... can we please watch the language? I thought this site was supposed to be kept kid friendly... maybe I'm wrong.

It works fine with xp.
-
I'm sure those kids are cussing more than we are, here. ---fudgesicle---.
Grid/Geometry Wars: I found both of these recently. You just have to look. Besides having different backgrounds, each plays a little differently.
-

Does that mean I can buy it and then move it to a seperate machine? I have a steam account on my primary PC, but I wouldnt want to install it on the arcade machine...

I don't think that the possibility of that justifies crossing any lines (or rules)...

Thanks, OJ... I'm as guilty as the rest, but as a parent I try to keep my language and writing clean.

I tried you can't. It looks for steam.

Well I'm not putting Steam on my arcade cab. I love the concept of anti-piracy software that prevents legitimate users from purchasing the product. Guess I'll wait for the cracked version. :laugh2:
-
I just tried the freeware game Grid Wars 2 and I agree that its perfect for a cab...in fact I'm going to put on my cab right now :) I've seen this game talked about before, but never bothered to play it, I see now I was missing out.
-
I just downloaded Grid Wars 2 and I'm amazed... is there a standard way to run a game like this on a cab that's running MAME? Can it be incorporated into a FrontLoader so that it loads as seamlessly as other games?
Jim
-
GAT: oh, you were serious. You can't cuss here, not really, but where did anyone say anything?
Grid Wars/cab: um, you mean just by itself? I have it accessible through GameEx (it has an emulator section for .lnk's), but for stand alone I'm sure there's a cmd/DOS way to do it.

There's a long-running thread on Geometry Wars clones in the "Game Review" forum. (Bet you didn't even know there was a "Game Review" forum, didja?)

Still, I sure would like to be able to buy the real deal, and I don't have a 360 and I'm not running Vista.

Hey, cowguy- which version did you try, the one on MSN games or the Steam version?
The one on MSN games says it's Vista only, and it looks like that version's a standalone- no Steam required.
What's so bad about Steam, anyway? I see the Steam download says it will run on XP.

Google "steam sucks" LOL.
It's a frontend that requires an internet connection to play the games. It basically assumes you are a pirate and verifies your files/installation over the internet every time you play (and sometimes takes forever).

Well ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, it does more than that, you cynic. It keeps your games updated and patched, gives quick and easy access to mods, and has a store to buy more games through...
but anyways.... I bought it. Hard to say no to $2.50. The thing freezes on me within a few seconds of play.
-
It's pretty heavy on the pc. How fast is yours? The minimuim is 128mb video ram 512mb ram
-
So, what kind of game is it? Looks like a pretty cool asteroids type game.
Also, with steam, don't you ahve to be online to play? And could this ever be launched from a frontend / command line?

It's sorta like an action packed asteroids with harder enemies. I'll make a video of in game play. For the steam question, you can use it offline. It can be launched from a frontend. You just need to go the steam games folder and create a shortcut to the .exe. Steams needs to be running tho to check for piracy or something like that.

You can actually find a load of great videos on youtube of the game..
Most are of people showing off their high score skills, so the screen will be filled with hundreds of enemies, but here is a good video showing the basic gameplay mechanics..

You control the shooting and moving controls seperately, so I would say it's much more like Robotron 2084 than Asteroids..
-
Wow that looks so amazing. I assume you need dual analog sticks then? I love the semi-vector look of it. Robotron meets asteroids!
-
I don't see any Asteroids in it. Robotron with spatial distortion and no levels - it just keeps going. I've actually gotten pretty far with digital sticks.
-
Has anybody been able to setup up 2 Ultrasticks for grid wars. I can't seem to be able to set them up. I'll get one to move and the other doesn't fire and then one to fire and not move and then... :hissy:
Is it me or does that config interface blow chunks? I love the game mind you, but man I'm about to freak out trying to get it to work like Robotron where one joystick moves and the other fires. Best I've been able to do is have it continuously fire in the direction I am moving. It feels like I am playing a football game in disguise. ::)
-

No, you don't. Use offline mode. But in this day of "always on" broadband, who cares.....

Please someone... I'm begging you. :'(

Play Black Widow. That IS a vector and is the same thing.
