Title: Arcade guns. What do i need to make em work?
Post by: talon006 on June 18, 2007, 12:24:00 am
Oy
Im new, and im preparing to make my own big ol arcade machine. my plan is too have a P.C. in it running MAME. now here is my question, while going on a MAME rom downloading spree (dont worry, all legal) i rememberd all of the good shooter games, so i looked into buying a couple guns. i discovered the price to be quite resonable, but then i wondered if they would work with my setup.

So my question is, what do i need to make an arcade gun work, and HOW do they work. if anyone knows, this could save me like 100 bucks.

Arcade guns from real arcade machines do not work with MAME and PCs. The known working guns are the Act Labs, LCD Top GUn and guncon's.

Pistol style either act labs or Top Gun LCD.  For shotguns you will probably have to mod one of these two into the shotgun shell.

The new Buck Hunter Pro cabs use standard lightguns, but have a board to interface them to the PC that's inside.

I had hoped to get a look inside one before quitting my job, but alas it was not to be.

By "standard" you mean standard arcade, right? (just checking.)

That's "all" that's needed for arcade lightguns to work on PCs.  A lightgun interface, sort of like the KeyWiz, Ipac, or OptiPac.  The problem is the lightgun interface would be more complicated.  There was (is?) one out there (r0r3 (http://www.r0r3.com/productsusbopticalgun.htm)) but no one here tried it, as it's $150 and it doesn't look to be XP compatible. :(

I wonder if this is the same as the one in Buck Hunter, or if there's another one out there. :dunno

All a J-PAC does is interface standard JAMMA controls to your PC, and route video.

What is availalble is the parts from an arcade game that has guns and uses a PC so it is PC compatable.  Cost was $150 and no one has tried one due to the cost.  Also it was not XP compatable.

O yeah I remeber now I have a mini-pac and video amp on a nanao and andy told me I needed a j-pac to split the h and V through the j-pac in porder for the light guns to work becuase the nanao was composite sync H&V both on one line and it would not work becuase the mini-pac does not have the onboard video chip that makes it possible.

I later found that all I needed to do was add a wire to H and connect it and the chassis will automaticly swap from composite H&V to a split single h and single v so I was definatly wrong on that one and remeber now.
