Title: artists- great or not?
Post by: danny_galaga on June 17, 2007, 05:53:05 am

http://reverent.org/great_art_or_not.html

this is tough. you know straight up they are using atypical examples of the famous artists works so you really have to think 'is this an amateur emulating a great artist or is it a lesser known famous artists work'?

i got 67% so not great but firmly in the more often than not camp...

edit: they have more art related quizes here:

'Try to tell if an image is of Pollock's masterpiece or of bird droppings.' sounds fun (",)

92% on the famous or unknown quiz... I only missed Winston Churchill's piece, I guessed famous.  Kind of a fun quiz.  The funny part to me is that I didn't recognize many of the artists names, I just had a feeling that it was painted by an accomplished artist instead of an unknown.

The sad part is that I spent four years at an arts college (doing theatre, not visual art) and I didn't recognize many of the names.

Paintings: yeah, I got 67%. Also thought maybe the eisenhower was famous cos of the theme. Missed the Renior.  Mostly went with my instinct on them, though the extent of my experience with painting is the art portion of my humanities classes back more than ten years ago. He was the only one who taught the art, and I only had two classes - classics to before the enlightenment, and the modern through contemporary eras (with a recap of the enlightenment).

Pollock: well, the lack of streaks in the bird shots is a give-away.

I know absolutely nothing about art.  I got a 75% by guessing.   8)

i didnt realise at the time that the non famous artists were famous politiicians. if it was just 'art students' versus famous artists i think i would have faired better. better than my attempt at the literature quizzes anyway! all mine were well below 50%...

Some of these are misleading. For example, the music one: some of the recordings are so old or just low fidelity...plus, just because a certain performer is considered a virtuoso doesn't mean they play a particular piece well, let alone in that particular instance. I only got two wrong on it, and one I think fits in that latter category. I didn't mistake the Glenn Gould peformance, though. Still, all the recordings should've been recent enough to have been originally printed on CD.

The only lit one I did was Dickens vs Bulwer-Lytton. Though not having read any Dickens besides small blurbs, and only recently having heard of B-L, I could pretty much tell between them cos the latter's doesn't flow, with distractive punctuated phrases being markers.
