Alright...so my game room is in the garage. The garage has the standard ole ceramic electric lamps in the ceiling. I didn't have any or motivation to take my butt down to home depot to do something about the lighting situation but I did have an old black lamp that the cord had been chewed off of (damn dog).
I took the black lamp shade, situated it upside down and then installed it and the florescent lamp in to the ceramic light socket. The lamp itself is what holds the shade on. Because it is a florescent lamp it doesn't get all too hot.
Well...I left it like that for about a month then I decided it was missing something. So I printed up a 7" Tron spinner emblem and well, the pictures say it all...

hah i like it.. very retro

Nice!
Grab some UV paint off eBay and decorate the shade, then throw a blacklight in there!

Looks great!

Dude Sick Idea. I think that emblem is one of the coolist graphics in all of Arcadium. Did you print that out on regular paper. And where did you get the file, I have been trying to get it from Arcade Art but their site has been hacked or something. Anyway good looking out!!!!!!! :notworthy:
-
Now that's an idea that could spawn others. Nice!
-
Find my "arcade clock" thread...there is a link in there to an .AI of the spinner graphic. Hell, I am just going to attach it here...
Ah...can't. It's about 3x the max size as is allowed here...yer gunna have to look for that link in the ARCADE CLOCKS thread.

...being Cheesy...

Ok, Im sorry... but I have to say... that is Horrifyingly ugly. :o
However, the idea is Brilliant :D
I think by using some large plexi discs, and some other material
possibly like a cut up shade... One could make a very hot Tron
gameroom light cover.
The lampshade just doesnt work well.. partly because its not
uniform in shape like the tron spinner. Its also too Deep.
Another Idea could be to make a super huge Tron "Disc"
out of thick plexi. Maybe a 4ft diamter. Painted florescent
color on the outside. Underlit from the backside. Blacklights placed
elsewhere in the room could cause the front side to glow too.

lol looks funny but interesting, just dont burn a hole in your ceiling!
-
It's definitely a cool looking conversation piece, even if it's a mix of the retro style of the shade and the "tech" style of the image..
Frizzle, you've definitely got an eye for cool things to make your game room entertaining!
-
Yeah...I DID say it was cheesy. I just needed something to kill the glare of the bare bulb off the plexi of my cabinets. The lamp shade worked well and because I have a tall ceiling, there is no issue with it dropping too low (it's probably 7.5'+ from the bottom of the shade (where the emblem is) to the floor). The light that came from the bottom was a bit too bright for my taste so I figured I would try the Tron emblem.
That is printed on standard photo paper at 600dpi BTW...

Bah. You ever finish that POS 8 way, rotating control panel? ::)
Nice job Frizzle. Time to go find a new cab, right? ;D

Actually Hoopz I am in the middle of a Centipede restoration (see http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=67325.0 )
Plus I am about to leave on a road trip to sell my Joust, and pick up a Vs Excitebike that I will eventually be doing SOMETHING with...

That or paint the flourescent blue or something. Right now it makes the print look washed out.

Sorry, I've gotta agree with Xiaou2 on this one. The fact that so many of you like that frightens me, It kind of explains all the frakenpanels out there, I mean if you think that is acceptable... ;) Remember kids telling somone that something ugly is good looking is NOT helping. Telling them how to fix it (which is what I'm about to do) is.
They actually make "spinner shaped" light covers. They are used in trailers and pre-fab homes a lot. You should be able to find one at lowes or home depot. They are cheap plastic, so they won't break the bank. Take one of these, get black plasti-coat and paint it. Now trace the decal pattern on the bottom of the shade, mask off the colored parts and paint that black. Now go back and fill in the color. The dang thing will glow and it'll look pretty close to a tron spinner!

I liked the clock, but the lampshade might be a bit much.
As for the download, head on over to http://localarcade.com/arcade_art/
If you search for Tron, you'll find it.

The Illistrator immages are still not there. You can see the small jpeg versions but when you try and download them you get nothing but a 1 kb file. :(
