As I'm waiting for all the parts to my cab to arrive, I started gathering the software I will need to run my system. I've never run Laser Disk games and decided to check Daphne out. I haven't down loaded it yet, but it seems nice and simple, but I've read about MAME getting LD support.
Can someone who keeps up with the development of both systems chime in and let me know if I should even bother with Daphne or will MAME have everything I need soon?
Thanks.

The answer is you have to use both. If and when daphne support in mame is completed, Aaron Giles seems to want to use these really big video files.... WAAAAAY bigger than those used in daphne. With that being said, mame will support games that daphne doesn't, such as the american laser games shooters.

Yes, but ignoring the big file (hey the 1TB HD is only $400 now!) issue, will MAME be able to play all the LD games that Daphne can or just the ones it can't?
-
Depends how long you are willing to wait. MAME doesn't play any LD games now and there is no definitive answer on when it will. The short answer is if you want to play LD games now, you need Daphne.

Hopefully Aaron decides to use a manageable file size for the video. I don't think somewhat larger files is such a bad thing - hard drive costs have plummeted, so storage isn't as much an issue as it used to be. I would really rather have these games available via Mame - I think in the end it will be better. For example, Daphne seems to only support keyboard encoders now. Currently there is only spotty at best support for a true joystick...

I've got Daphne working fine with my USB based Ultrastik's. The only problem I ran into was with mouse buttons from my USB trackball. Daphne wouldn't recognize the mouse input.

I agree. Is there a list of all LD games and a list of which ones Daphne supports anywhere?

Dmod, how did you get Daphne working with your U360s?
Also, do you need mouse control within Daphne? I mean, to play the games? I thought they were all joystick controlled...
I'm like XtraSmiley, in that I'm configuring the software in my MAME pc, and I'm also mucking around with Daphne. Although, if you read the new thread I'm about to post, I'm not having much joy with the game itself. But eventually, I will be running it and playing with my U360s.

At the risk of hijacking this thread even further...
In my original CP setup, I was wiring my USB trackball mouse buttons to P1 buttons 1 and 2. This worked fine for MAME but not Daphne. I had to rewire the mouse buttons over to P1 buttons 5 and 6 instead.
I've got Daphne set up to use my P1 buttons 1 and 2 which are currently wired to my U360 through the optional wire harness that Andy sells.
Using the Daphne configuration options, I didn't have any trouble getting it to recognize the U360 button presses.
If you can't get it to work, PM me and I can take a closer look at my Daphne setup when I get home later.

I'm interested in how you made the buttons connected to your 360s work properly with daphne. Are you launching from a front end or just using daphne loader?
I'm launching from within a frontend (3DArcade) using command lines to skip daphneloader. This is very nice. BUT I can't seem to remap the buttons to work properly, however.
Can you post your dainput.ini file found within the daphne folder and also include a list of what buttons you've assigned to do what functions.
thanks
