Title: Ipac problem
Post by: Mike on April 19, 2003, 06:47:48 pm
I'm having a goofy problem with my ipac now that I rebuilt my cab with windows 2000. The jumper is set to mame to default all the keys but I'm getting goofy keys instead of the mame keys. I had a wireless keyboard plugged into it, I thought that might be the problem but i rebooted a couple times with out it and I'm still having the problem. I made sure the eprom was in all the way also. I don't think it could be a wiring problem since all the keys work they just aren't doing what they are suppose to. Like my player 1 start button is now v instead of 1 and my player 2 start button is ' instead of 2. Anyone who has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Did you try entering test mode and checking for stuck keys?   If that does  not work your best bet is to email andy directly as he is very helpful and has seen just about all the problems.

have you checked your wiring?  it sounds like you could have some wires crossed.

One of the inputs is dead altogether on my Ipac. But luckily I wasn't using them all anyway. I still think it is a great product, and will certainly get another one someday.

No, its not a crossed wire as it will function normally as well.

I have seen mame exhibit similar problems for me under the following circumstances: You set up one or more joysticks/pads in the windows control panel, configure mame for joystick input and then unplug the sticks/pads and play mame. The problems were intermittent. If I plugged the stick/pad back in or deleted them from the control panel then everything was fine.

can't you just do the interactive programming mode and resest them back to default?

I had the same button mapping issue.  I checked all the wiring.  Did the obligitory reboot, but no luck.

Th machine had been on for 4 days straight,  I'm on vacation. So I turned it off and left it off for a few hours.  Everything is OK now.  Could it be an over heating issue?  My cabinet does not get hot, but maybe the ipac can't deal with long periods of use??

I think you may have hit it on the head because I turned the machine off for a while and turned it back on. Now all the keys are right except my shift key isn't working. I've had it off for several days since posting that and I'll see if the shift key is working again tonight.

The I-PAC is definitely not heat-sensitive. If the shift functions are not working then there is an excellent opportunity to troubleshoot the problem because this means there is a "solid" fault to look at. You just need to find out which input is stuck (which disables shift functions). There are 3 ways to do this, test mode, running Ghostkey.exe or with a voltmeter. This is covered in more detail on the page www.ultimarc.com/ipac2.html in the troubleshooting section.
Stuck keys or switches wired to NC instead of NO can sometimes be misleading as they will still appear to work in a game but eventually cause strange problems.
If still no luck, email me as this kind of problem is best attacked with a step-by-step approach best done by email rather than on here.
