Two words: Production Hell.
That project will stay there for the foreseeable future.

Why does every video game -> movie port with a male lead have The Rock?

Why does every video game -> movie port with a male lead have The Rock?

Perhaps an answer to that is a question itself: why make a ---smurfing--- movie out of a video game? Particularly one as narrow as Spy Hunter?

Or perhaps the recent spyhunter videogame remake, which is what this movie is based upon, NOT the spyhunter we all grew up with, starred The Rock and was always planned to be followed by a movie tie-in.  Basically the original spyhunter was a total rip-off of the 007 films, but they couldn't get the liscense.  So, it's impossible to make a movie based on the real spyhunter game.

We got the "Rock" because Arnie is too busy playing guvner in our great state of CalifornEYEahh.  The story will be secondary to most of us because we just like to see new ways to blow s%$t up.

Wow, I got hood-winked on the necro again!

Ryan Gosling is a decent actor. Guess he isn't getting decent projects these days.....

I'll believe this one when I see it.  To be honest though, I don't want to see it.  The director is already talking about how he'd like to create a spy franchise.  Sorry to harsh your buzz there genius, but midway created this spy franchise, you'd merely be milking/butchering it.  Also all he should be doing is making a sequels to zombie land.  He has his killer franchsie already but he refuses to use it.

Why do directors get ahold of somebody else's IP and decide they are going to "create" something with it?  If you are working on a liscensed film, you are the source material's ---smurfette--- if you want to do the franchise any justice.  Peter Jackson understands this, and his movies are critically acclaimed AND sell amazingly well.

I'm not even sure you could say Midway had much IP with Spy Hunter.  While it's a great game, the car is basically the exact same car from James Bond - Goldfinger, including bullets, oil slick, and smokescreen.  Even the boats came from another James Bond movie where he was racing around and dropping oil drums out the back to blow up the bad guys.

I agree with that.  It started out as a james bond game... they wanted the official score for the game, but they didn't get the rights and in true Midway fashion they said "screw it! we'll release it anyway!"

So my point is the guy wants to "create" a franchise out of an exising franchise, that is a rip-off of another franchise.  Come up with your own ideas hollywood, stop scraping the bottom of the barrel for shortcuts.
