I guess many of you already noticed that Localarcade has been hacked. At first I thought that the arcade_art-side would work but all graphics have small size.
I hope they soon get back online :(
Don't they have something better to do?

Lame.

Not the sharpest hacker, just skip the front page (http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/).

The photos are blocked at work and babel fish is having issues. What does the page say?

It's likely a skript kiddie, so they have no ability to go any deeper than what the script can do.

I wonder what it is about localarcade that keeps drawing these dorks. This has happened several times before.

They must have heard that someone isn't applying their patches.

I tried that too. I tried Spanish, Portugese, and Italian. All of them came up as mixed nonsense. What language is this in? Or are they just using some weird vocabulary or dialect?

It's not that easy......try to download a file.....they all have a small size (~600 Bytes) and won't open ;)

That doesn't imply that the skript kiddie is directly responsible for that. The correct procedure is to immediately disable code and remove any files that potentially puts the visitor at risk. The author could have relocated all the zip files to ensure that they don't carry payloads. However, a ~600 byte file is a known file size from a particular class of virus. It scans your hard drive and destroys files with a specific extension, usually mp3, but it's known to attack .doc, .txt, .zip, jpg, amongst others. Change the extension, IIRC, it's either HTML or plain text with a message that basically amounts to, "you got screwed." It's not a virus I've seen in a long long time though, not since Kazaa was still free. I can't download the .zip file to verify what I wrote though, I just get a "Server not found" error. Oh well. :badmood:

Wow.. What the hell is it about Localarcade that brings these jackasses around as opposed to any other relative site?
Is there some sort of "hacker registry" that they need to make a phone call to be excluded from?

Sometimes all they have to do is search for certain key phrases that come in a default installation of certain web packages.

Indeed, hacking is pretty easy. There is a security leak in "4images 1.7.3" (the software used by localarcade). A hacker finds this info on a hacker list or something. Then you start google and you search for "Powered by 4images 1.7.3". Presto, a hack and a whole list of possible victims.
I usually try to make sure that from the website it's not obvious which software it uses. Obviously one should also make sure to apply all security patches as soon as possible, but when it's a hobby project people don't often have the time.
