Title: Really really stupid question...
Post by: hypes on June 01, 2007, 10:39:50 pm
Hiya,

I feel like a stupid ass asking a question like this....

I bought a Happ 3" PS2/USB trackball....the mouse cursor only goes up and down.

Is this normal?  I thought the trackballs would allow for movement in all directions...

Thanks,
Hypes

Look at the optic boards and make sure that the connectors are properly seated. Check for any loose/broken wires.

If you do end up with a bad optic board, a guy sells them new for like $5 each on here.

And to whom do I humbly have to ask to purchase such a piece?  I took the trackball off the mounting plate and manually spun the L/R spinner....got zippy response.

If $5.00 will fix this issue...I'm all for it....just point me toward the person and they'll have the money and  a shipping address post haste.

I wanna get my MAME cab done before my son is born.

If you have one small optic board and one larger board then the regular small optic board can be replaced but not the other by the boards being sold here.   If your PS2/USB interface is part of one board then the only replacement is from Happs.  I heard they had problems with the earlier boards maybe you can get a deal one one.

It's the small optic board...not the larger one that has the leads off to the PS/2 and USB connector.

And I apologize for the odd behavior in my previous post...I decided the only way to salvage the night's work was to have a G&T or 4.  So I was pretty hammered when that happened.

Where can I find small optic board?

Glad it was the small one.  With the big one you are sort of SOL.

Sounds to me like the optic board works.  When you spin the ball L/R do all the rollers move as expected?

Yes....both spinners work fine when I roll the ball.  When I roll the ball up and down, that movement is "sensed" and the mouse cursor moves in the up and down direction.  When I move the ball from left to right, the spinner moves, but the mouse cursor does not.

I did find that wiggling the black optic sensor that the wheel is attached to will allow for some sporadic L/R movement...but I'd have to take the whole trackball apart in order to debug it with a multi-meter (and I'm just not in the mood for doing that now).

Thanks for the linkee...will be checking into that asap...just wanna get my boxen done.

OK, I took "got a zippy response" like "spinning the roller moved the cursor"

A little misunderstanding a guess...

Swap the optic boards.  Does the problem travel?

Swap the optic boards.  Does the problem travel?

Yes!  Do this before you buy a replacement optic board.

Leave the wiring harness and everything else where it is, only move the optic boards.  If suddenly you have left/right travel but you lose up/down, it's the optic board.  If the problem stays the same, you just have a wiring problem.

And if it travels, try some fixes before you get a new board. Touch up the solder joints.  Clean the optics of any dust.
