Title: Wei-ya replacement chassis for U5000?
Post by: Q*Bert_OP on May 31, 2007, 10:21:01 pm
Is there such thing as a cheepo Wei-ya replacement chassis for a U5000?

Short answer: NO.

Longer answer: Wells-Gardner made a conversion kit called the U5000 to k7500 conversion. However it's very expensive and you must use the new yoke supplied in the kit as it's different than the u5000's yoke.

well why not?  I swapped in a WeiYa 826HR for my 25k7193 board last year.   It isnt a great board because it couldnt drive the tube completely white... but works perfect for any older arcade game (that is mostly black background etc).

So, unless the yoke impedance is incompatible, it's a cheap alternative... but not a 100% fit.

Try a JenShin chassis instead of the WeiYa--The WeiYa's have weak power supplies and can't drive high intensity on all 3 guns without pulsing down darker when the screen attempts to go bright.

Also, I've found the JenShin's have a 7 for 7 yoke compatability without geometric distortion on 25 to 27" tubes, where I only found 1 out of 7 random 25" TV tube that worked with the WeiYa's chassis and didn't have distortion.

Why not..... because the U5000 is a medium res chassis. That's why not.

well ok! :)  Just curious... just because the chassis was med res... does that mean the tube is?

The yoke that came with the U5000 is a medium res yoke. The tube could be medium or standard res.

Thanks Ken for the straight answer... pull no punches man! :)  just messing with you.

I personally wont be messing with the WeiYa board again if I can get my hands on a JennShin.

Need sleepy

Remember that the only source for the Jen Shinn monitor chassis in North America is 8liners.com

The Wei-ya is available from several sources at better prices. For those using it with 25" tubes you should only use the 825H chassis NOT the 826. It's always a good idea to purchase the matching Wei-ya yoke too.

But most people do not want to do yoke swaps and reconvergence. My experience has been the JS works on every 23 to 27" tube I've thrown at it without any adjustments other than those on the chassis itself.  I also know that many times tubes are not compatible with a certain yoke (more so classic yokes, but none the less).  For an extra $20, the JS produces a sharper image, works with (many) more yokes out of the box and doesn't have a weak power supply--in fact has a switch mode one and doesn't require an additional isolation transformer.

To each their own, but after comparing both the 19 and 25 series from both WeiYa and JenShin, the $20 difference in price is easily compensated by less time futzing / picking a compatible tube+yoke, and a much better final image quality.   Perhaps WeiYa are better at durability, but been happier with JS for the last 3 years myself.

I think the prior write ups by various people here on the image (blurry/blooming) and power supply issues (shrinking/color dimming screen with bright rasters) with the WeiYa are enough to justify looking elsewhere.

Actually, is it a particular chassis model number from Wei-ya you experience trouble with?

All the Wei-yas I've dealt with have been nice performers. Their Electrohome G07 replacement and the various models rebranded by Eygo and Promax have also been good runners. No blooming or brightness problems at all.

You know that Wei-ya also makes chassis with built-in switching power supplies (no isolation xformer needed) don't you?
