Title: MUD Games
Post by: GreenKnight37 on May 29, 2007, 11:46:19 pm
Anyone here play MUD games?

I was heavy into these during the early days of the internet and I've been feeling the urge to play a few.  What I'm seeing now is definitely a lot more complex and less intuitive then the simple games I use to play.  I was big on Cosrin and Darkness Falls (ie, the free AOL games, prior to the realization that companies could charge for this type of content).

The MMO games are the big draw now, but I'm nostalgic...and I don't like monthly fees ;)

Any recommendations if people are still playing these games?

I don't know why you're posting this to "Arcade misc", but anyways......  Some popular MUDs right now are "Achea" and related games by the same company.

Oops...I thought I was in "Everything Else".  Too bad I can't move a topic myself...I'll have to PM one of the mods.

I'm actually trying the Achaea MUD right now.  Its has a ton of options, which can be good, but its also a learning curve.  I'm looking for more of a casual thing I can jump into.

Oddly enough, after posting this I found a highly beta version of a Darkness Falls remake --- Mythic Falls http://www.mythic-falls.com/index.html (http://www.mythic-falls.com/index.html)

Basically no room descriptions, only about 10 people only (a few testers and the developers), and lacking just about everything.  But it has some of the fundamentals setup and shows some promise.  If I just remember to go back there in a year or two, maybe I can play it ;)

I used to MUD a little but never got into the fact that (at the time) you lost all of your possessions every time you logged out.

I did MOO heavily for a long time in the mid 90s.  I even ran a MOO for a while along with a friend of mine.

I think that "feature" was pretty much eradicated by 93 or 94.

I used to program for a couple of muds (if you play any based on the CircleMUD code you're using some of my work) but I never enjoyed playing them.  That's how I met my wife, though.  :)

I can't imagine text muds being too popular nowadays with all the quality graphical MMORPGs everyone's playing.  I guess they might be the only alternative if you're on dialup, but if you've got broadband, wouldn't you rather play one of the free MMOs?

I used to be an Imp on a mud, wrote an area for it too. Illusions Of The Mind. Good times, great fun.
