I am having trouble getting some front ends to work. I was wondering if you have to combine the folders of mame with them?
should i unzip a front end in my mame folder?
i am totally clueless.

Try Atomic FE and use the plug and play module then just put your roms in the rom folder, and Mgalaxy all in one vesion 1.1 same again roms in rom folder, no programming needed for those two , (only ones I can get to work myself )

I like MAME32 (needs no FE)
Or
MaLa with fastmame
arcade.exe is a front end that requires no installation - just drop it in your MAME folder and double click it:

With Atomic (and I'm guessing MGal) doing what he said means the paths are already set in the manager. What, no one told you about paths?...or how to set them? No ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---? Welcome to the world of things no one seems to think to say. This is another wiki project of mine.

Don't mix your emulators, roms, and frontends.
You might try getting command line MAME to work first before trying a front end. The front end needs a rom path to build a game list, MAME needs the rom path to find roms to load. Typically, front ends don't read the emulator rom path because not all emulators have rom paths, or the emulator config files are non standard.

The paths are clearly stated in the text of the install when you load a Plug and Play module. You're probably one of those people that just click Next, and don't read...
Or, you can check out my documentation - which tells you the same thing. Check out my signature below for more information about installing AtomicFE, including a troubleshooting section.
