Title: MLCS slot cutter assembly
Post by: karlpenney on May 14, 2007, 03:21:08 pm
Does anyone know the proper order of assembly of the arbor, cutter, washers, bearing, spacer, etc. for the MLCS 1/16" 3-wing slot cutters?  I have been trying to find out from MLCS, but they don't sound too sure about it.  They suggested the order is arbor, cutter, washer, bearing, washer, spacer, nut.  However, the arbor shaft is a little bit narrower near the top, so if you put the cutter on first, it can move sideways a bit.  Not sure if this is critical or not, but just want to make sure before I start.

2 washers, cutter, washer, BEARING ;), nut. Mine is a whiteside but it's probably universal for most brands.

2 washers, cutter, washer, BEARING, nut - right?

the arbor from MLCS came with 2 washers and a spacer, which is about 1/4" thick.  mlcs did come back and say to install this spacer first, cuz otherwise the cutter can move laterally because of the narrower shaft at the top.  however, with everything on, there are not enough threads left at the end to fully engage the nut, it only goes about halfway.  probably won't fly off, but you never know.  i guess i'll have to get a couple more washers to replace the spacer instead.  it should've come with the correct parts needed in the first place though.

Yeah. Sorta forgot about the bearing... :-[
But yeah you have it figured out. I wouldn't even use the second washer.

it should've come with the correct parts needed in the first place though.

That's why I stick with whiteside. ;)
