There have been a ton of little birds flying around my house the past week or two and I just noticed they are building nests on the side of my house. I don't really mind, although the birds flying so close to the windows is driving my cats nuts, I just wanted to make sure its not somehow bad for my house. Also, does anyone happen to know what type of birds make these nests? I would take a picture of the birds, but they fly really fast and I never see them just sitting around.
The nest in the first pic isn't finished yet, so if it is bad for my house, I can get rid of it before it will dramatically affect them.
If you look close in the second picture you can see a birds head sticking out of the nest.

Really big bees!

Judging from the construction materials of your house, I doubt the birds will be a problem. If you want to be sure, though, check your attic on the opposite side side of the nest to make they aren't coming through. That would be my only concern, though. While you're in the attic, make sure any entrances are sealed. Your probably don't want any birds IN your house.

The nest looks like it is made out of mud. The bird could be some type of swallow.
Here is info from wiki: Swallow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirundinidae)
You should feed them some Rice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVEUYU2erBw) ;D

Boom.

as long as they're not destroying the siding and getting inside, no major harm, but the side of your house will soon have a nice layer of bird poop on it
:P

The worst problem you may have is if they're near your bedroom and you're a light sleeper. The baby birds in the tree next to our house wake ---my bottom--- up every morning at about 5 am this time of year. In fact, it just started this morning, strangely enough...

Looking at the picture of the swallow on that page, I think that is what they are. It looks like they could actually be a good thing to have them around since it says they feed on insects. I'm not really concerned with the noise because my house has thick insolation and dual pain windows, so once the windows are closed, I pretty much can't hear anything outside.
I guess I'll just let them be.

Yup sure looks like a swallow nest to me...Main problem you'll have is that you will never get the stucco clean again. Also...Where one pair builds a nest others follow and they will build a whole swallow city there. You deside if you want that.
At one of my old works they became such a problem that netting was installed to keep them out. They just figures out how to build anyway...and they never stopped building.
All in all they are facinating to watch but I wouldn't let them build on my house.

We went under a low concrete bridge in my buddies boat, and there were literally hundreds of those nests. When the birds were startled and took flight, there were so many that it got noticeably darker in the tunnel from them blocking the light.
Watch them fly if you get a chance, they're like little fighter planes. They dive fast and bank into turns in a way I've never seen other birds do. They're totally harmless and non-destructive, other than crapping all over the side of your house.

Birds
I thought this was going to be a thread about lady problems.
I recognized those mud birds right away, I've got some trying to build on my house. I keep scraping the nest off because last time I let them nest they spent all summer dive bombing me. Besides, the front yard is for my bunny to play in, he doesn't need any kamakazi birds upsetting him (see the myspace link for bunny pics).

might the bunny eat the birds, or vice versa?

i thought this thread was going to be about the hitchcock classic, or the remake:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884788/
which will suck arse, even if it does star naomi watts...

I'd break out the powerwasher and get that out of there before more arrive. Birds are filthy.

My father-in-law sets traps for swallows because he wants a certain type of bird (purple marten, I think) to nest in the birdhouses he has. I still think it is wrong, but at least now I see why he does it - those things will overwhelm a prime location.
-
African or European?

Those purple birds eat mosquitos. You setup special houses for them.
