Title: CP Laminate Opinion
Post by: urbecrisch on May 07, 2007, 11:32:27 am
I just want to know if anyone has used this product on their CP or if there's a better option out there.    http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=261-618

Will my CP look strange if I'm painting my CAB but I use this laminate for the CP?

The CP top will have artwork from Mamemarquees so I need this only for the sides.  Let me know what you think and what other products you suggest.  Cheers!

Quite a few people have used it and the reviews are positive.

ok, I re-read. You want to use this on the sides? I assume on the coin door/kickplate area as well? I'm sure it would look ok. The only thing I would be worried about is it's width. At 24", you may need multiple layers of it.

Actually I'm planning on using the laminate on the CP only.  The rest of my CAB is primed and ready to be painted as well as the kickplate.  My only concern is how the CAB will look with the laminate CP.  I'm planning on finishing the CP before I paint the CAB.  If it doesn't look good I guess I can always peel off/remove the laminate.

Does anyone have any PICS of this laminate on a CAB/CP?

I would make the sides of the CP the same as the rest of the cab.  Whatever color you paint the cab paint the CP sides.  A good paint job will be more then enough to protect the cp.

On the other hand if the laminate is cheap enough why not order it up and try.  Just temp mount it and if you don't like it you can always remove the stuff.

I used laminate on the sides of the cab and I used the material from parts express on the sides of the control panel.  I decided to not use laminate on the control panel so the edges would be smoother.  Very easy to install and cuts cleanly with a razor blade.  It has been on my cab for a couple of years now with a lot of teenage boys playing it and it is still in good shape.

namedos, any chance you can post a PIC of your CAB/CP?  Also, where did you get your CAB laminate from?  Cheers!

I bought the laminate from Lowes.  Used three different colors.  They can special order it for you.  Runs about $50 per sheet.  Take a look at what size you need as there are several different sizes they can get for you.

Is there anything specific you want to see with the picture?  I don't have any sitting around.

No, just wanted to see what it looks like.  So you had to buy 3 sheets of laminate ($50 ea.) for a total of $150?

They run in 4 x 8 sheets normally but you can buy other sizes.  I built the UA II and chose to go with different colors for the upper side, lower side and front.  You will need a little bit of extra space on each side to rough fit the  laminate.  Maybe a couple inches on each side.

I used Parts Express sticky stuff on the side of my CP box.

It looks good, but you have to apply it slowly to make sure it's on tightly.  It's a bit painful wrapping oddly shaped things (like my CP box).  For the rest i will use normal plastic laminate.

It also has ugly seams underneath and inside, but no one will see that.

CoryC, looking good.  Are you laminating your CAB too or just painting it?

I'm going to use normal plastic laminate (adhesive & roller kind) for the cab.

I didn't use it on the CP box as it was oddly shaped and i was worried about it being too fiddly.

CoryC, on your CP, did you just stick on the laminate and then use a utility knife to cut the shape of the CP?  How did you hide the seams around the corners?

With the box on it's side i had to unroll & unpeel a few inches at a time and fit it well.   I used a hairdryer to heat it up and smooth it out better as i went.  You have to go very slowly.

I trimmed the excess and folder it under and over the edges.  No one will see there so i didn't care.

It is good stuff, but it really is painful doing something big like this.  It is perfect for small bits i think though (I saw Knievel use it on some small pieces on the taito machine i think).

Next time i'd probably try normal laminate or painting even.
