This crappy :censored: conversion I picked up looked familar
the price was right and needed a new project.
-
Wow, it's going to take a lot of elbow grease...but this is one of those cabs that is DEFINITELY worth the effort. Burgertime is a very attractive cabinet. Just make sure that the sideart is easily visible when you're done. Don't sandwich it between two cabs.
-
Are you going to restore it, or Mame it?
-
He will be restoring it I am sure. He is the guy behind thisoldgame.com (http://thisoldgame.com). He will be selling the Burgertime stencils that he uses to fix this badboy up. If it comes out nice, which I think it will, he definitely has a customer in me. :applaud:
-
Yes full on Arcade restoration. This wont be your typical restore /build blog
most of the reproductions I'll produce for this restartion will be avalibal at
www.ThisOldGame.com (http://www.ThisOldGame.com)
I needed something with a challenge. and this was just the meal to fill the bill.
was such a nice piece orginally-Lets paint it Black and convert it! :banghead:
I'll be showing alot of screenprinting process in the restoration
as well as all the stenciling work from the cut to the applications.
Hoping to shed a little more light on the mysterys that is Screenprinting
Gutted the cabinet completly
now for the stripping... :censored:
-
No saving this as-is so the artwork has been redrawn, sized, and vectorized.
Then film positives are made for each color to be printed. the first color in this case will be white. Pic showing the film postive aligment on where it will be placed and screened
on a vinyl overlay
-
The image is set the screen is place and the white is ready for printing.
-
each indiviaual color is alignd and printed one at a time after the previous color has been dryed, new screens made for the next color, red
and the same is done for the orange.
-
Each color printed is also slightly enlarged or outlined to provide "Trap"
the final color usally Black that holds all the detail
should hide all the points where the colors overlap
FYI: If youve ever noticed original or even NOS parts sometimes have colors slightly off in alignment from the black this is from restration betweeen color prints and or not allowing enough of "trap" to be hidden behind.
-
and finally the moment of truth
months of work boil down to this critical moment
the final color. checking the wind resistance...
planet aligment...take a deep breath...
-

Yep, and I can tell you now that the quality will be excellent. Check out how his Galaxian CPO turned out at:

Sweet. Great game, great cab, and great breakdown of the screen-printing process. Can't wait to see the final beast.
-
Are you going to restore it, or Mame it?
This poor thing has been through enough abuse.

Next up...The Install!

Next up...The Install!
That looks awesome. That is a very nice skill to have. I take it it is easier to print to vinyl then apply, than to register/print straight to the cab? I'm coming up on installing some side art on my driving cab, and am looking forward to learning from your description / tricks of the trade when it comes to the installation.

Amazing work.

Yes I couldve screened it directly to the cabinet
but felt there would be others in need of the vinyl
overlays which Ive got for sale www.ThisOldGame.com (http://www.ThisOldGame.com)
the same will be for the stencils and CPOs as well
Next I will be showing some tips and tricks of the trade on the installtion
So you dont end up with something like this guy did :dizzy:

Ha, that cab looks "noice".
-
I'm interested in this process, if you were to do it right on the cab, would the process be different? Would you use different paint/ink (not sure what you use now). Does the surface you are screen printing have to be prepped in some way? Does it matter if it's super smooth, or can it be slightly textured (like a finish that is rolled on with a foam roller, it's not really really bad, but it's not sprayed on smooth either).
-
not a whole lot of differerance. the screen lays and secures to the cabinet surface
inks would be diferent
if its a painted wood surface-Enamel screen ink (a smooth painted surface is best)
otherwise the ink when screened will tend to leak out and the edges wont be as sharp.
some cabinets had vinyl overlays. Ataris, Galaxian, etc. those would take
a vinyl solvent ink to screen on top of that
My next project- Pacman will have this process of screening directly to the Cabinet.
which Ill post those steps as well when I get that project rolling
-
Hey Rich,
I love Burgertime and will follow this thread closely !
IMHO silk screening will beat inkjet printing anytime on this kind of work. The only time when I'd use (buy) inkjet is for a "one off" marquee.
Rich, small "reminder".....(we already mailed about this):
Since you are also making the metal CPO's for Space Invaders etc. would it also be possible to make the midway metal Coin door plates ?
And while we're at it: My dear Galaxian is also missing the manufacturer's plate on the back (Namco/Bally). It's very simple "B/W" and also on metal :D
I mean this one:
-
I honestly try to stay away from this game. It actually makes me hungry for a burger and french fries every time I play it. Not that that's a bad thing I guess, I usually make my own instead of getting fast food. But nice cabinet!!

I saw this tutorial on copper plating and etching altoid tins:
http://steampunkworkshop.com/altoid-etch.shtml
Could be used to make a cool little plate (ditch the copper plating part). I'm sure it applies to more than just altoid tins too...
-
Interesting, but I'm pretty sure the original was simply silk-screen printed just like the Space Invaders CPO's on the metal. Since it's tiny and only requires one color (black), it should be "a breeze" to make (for guys that can do silk-screen printing, like Rich).

I think it's anodized aluminum. My reason for this belief is that it doesn't come off with paint remover. If it were just paint it would slough right off.
-
Im on it!
I use anodized aluminum and enamel baked inks for the Space Invaders and Gorf Cpos and have lots of smaller drop pieces that would be perfect for these plates
easy 1 color print will probably need a similar one for this BT project as it was missing and my Pacman was painted over :banghead:
-
 :applaud: :notworthy:
Great to hear Rich !!! :)
-
ok the cabiet front is sanded, filled and ready for install.
-
These steps work for just about any and all front or side vinyl art applications
LIst of things Needed
1-Patience
2-Naptha (great multi-purpose cleaner removes oils, old adhesives, goo, etc.dosnt leave a residue and evaporates fast))
3-A 50/50 mix of water and Alcohol (the rubbing kind not the drinking kind) with a squit of hand soap
DONT USE WINDEX!-windex or other cleaners that contain amonia are bad. :'(
4-squeegee (I provide these with all my art @ thisoldgame.com)
Now lets get started...
-
when ever possible lay the cabinet down gravity works wonders
This kickplate art is overzed about a 1/4" all the way around which will make for a better fit when finsihed.
-lay the art face down and remove the backing.
-spray the adhesive side with e 50/50 mix
-Flip decal over and move it into posistion
-
-using the squueggee press and push excess water and air out
-trim out coindor with an exacto (dosnt have to be perfect coin door fram will cover it up
-trim sides use a NEW blade here you want a nice clean cut the blade tip will fall right into the corner and act as a cutting guide.
-again using the squeeege press decal on the edge sides just trimmed
pushing any remaing excess water out.
-next the hardest step of all-WAITING... untill dry
-
I'm loving your details installation guide, keep it coming! Nice to hear an experts take on it.
-
Thanks, Once the decal is dry, you can peel off the premask it can be srayed with your 50/50 mix to make it a little easier you dont want to lift the decal creating air bubbles and other problems. and if all goes well you end up with something like this.
Will add the coin door back once its been reworked
-
Chapter 2: SIDE ART STENCILING 101
Unforntunaly the side art was unsaveable.
-
Sanded down and ready fro prime and paint
Match color to a spot behind the MFG plate on Back of the cab underneath was the orginal Orange "mustard" color that didnt get painted over :applaud:
Matched to an enamel Satin Finsh-Behr "Yam" 290B-7 (D)
-
Sanded down
The way you say it - it sounds easy...
This was one of the more demanding/patience required jobs that I did with any of my cabs. Good work!
-
I hope for the sake of your arms that the sander you used wears a belt. I've had to remove the finish from a panel about that size before and while it took a gentle touch with the belt sander, I couldn't imagine doing it with just a random orbit or other palm sander. The kick panel art looks great, I can't wait to see the sides. I probably don't have any use for the screening info, but I admire anybody who can so clearly share a process with others so that they may sometime be able to do it themselves. Thank you, and keep up the great work.

I believe you looking for the coin door plates? If so, arcadeshop carries about 2-3 different Midway coin door plates.

Nope. The plate he is looking for is the Manufacturer ID plate that goes on the back of the cab.

Thanks much hard work is true and after the bulk of hard sanding its all in the hand.
I thought I mainly put the screening up there just to show how much differet it really is over inkjets, you be suprized how many people, just dont get it. and Hope some will learned a littitle somethin along da way.
-
I'll have those MFG aluminum plates up on my site later in the week
the arts vectorized and the materials cut, just need to squeeze in some screen time.
so keep checking back in at the site they will be on the home page when ready
GAME ON!
-
Thanks for your reply Audiomidiman, but two things:
1) As horseboy already mentioned, indeed in the first place I'm looking for that manufacturer's back plate.
2) About the coin door plates: I actualy already have one from www.arcadeshop.com and it's on my machine now. It's ok, quality is ok, but there are some things that could be better. I mentioned this in my Galaxian No.815 thread. Check it out here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=62784.msg656196#msg656196
Since I've got my CPO from Rich, I am 100% convinced of the quality he makes. Since he's doing silk screening VERY precisely and also does it on REAL metal, I'm pretty sure the plates will turn out great.
We've discussed doing the coin door plates as well. I hope Rich will manage to squeeze these into his program as well :D
Rich, great news about the plates !!!

I still haven't ordered mine yet, and would much prefer one on metal as well. If you make one, mind as well go for two! Let me know and I'm in.

Mmmm, no news on thisoldgame.com yet... any updates Rich ? (Not trying to stress you, just curious ;) )

Neil

How bout some progress on the Burgertime Rich? I just picked mine up last week. It will need a CPO, but the art is in great shape otherwise. I'm looking forward to seeing how your stencil job turns out.
Later,

Well... my wife just discovered Burgertime and is now hooked. Bust-a-Move just dropped down to #2 on her list.
Anyway, how rare is it to find an old Burgertime cabinet to restore? I have been to a lot of places selling old cabinets and have never come across one. I would love to bring one of these back to it's original condition.
-
They aren't terribly common, although I couldn't give exact production numbers.

Ebay and craigslist. I have only seen a couple here and there in the last 5 or so years. People usually don't part with them.
-
at around 22,000 (midway version)
hard to say how many are still out there :dunno
this one was a converted game and seller wasnt aware of its orginal orgins
but the cabinet shape gave it away.
Havnt seen many since. even the working boardsets are hard to come by
I could post up some cabinet dementions for this one
and even provide cnc router files if youd like a build project.

Your project looks great though. Here's to you...
Let's hope I can find a cab and use those stencils some day.
P.S. - how are you at the game? I cant get past L3. Damn, I need a level by level strategy.

Yeah, I played BT a LOT. I especialy went to a cinema (Luxor) in Rotterdam to play it. We had no arcades in the big cities in the 80s. I'm pretty sure that it was a generic cab and not the "real" one. I must have remembered it.
Looking at the cab, isn't this basicaly a Ms.Pac/Galaga with different sides ?
I'm not saying to destroy a Ms.Pac/Galaga but if you already got both of these, it would be a possibility to replace only the sides......
-

yes it's the same, and there's some people converting BT to Ms.Pac/Galaga using saw
anyway the problem still the same Ms.Pac and Galag are as rare as Burgertime, if I find one of the 3 here (but I suspect I will not :banghead:) I won't convert it, just restore it :D :D

Glad to see Zorg hosting these :) As an FYI though, anytime someone needs space to host BYOAC style projects, unless there are copyright concerns, the answer is most likely yes :) I have tons of space and plenty of available bandwidth.
Cheers!

Hey guys sorry BT has been on the backburner for so long
Too many projects for just 1 mere mortal man.
new updated pics and progress coming soon.
and will upload the CNC router files shortly.
Also putting together a pdf file with measurements, assemblies and special cut notes.
Level42 this is for you
I still need to jig up for the drilling but they are basically screened and ready.
:applaud:
-
Yiha !!!!! And they look very very nice !!!! :applaud: :applaud:
-
Plate looks great. Anxiously awaiting BT progress pix.
Thanks,

A big Thank's to Rich.
burgertime CNC files available here burgertime.zip (http://vectorlib2.free.fr/Plans/vect/burgertime.zip)
archive contains the following (preview scaled down)
-
Thanks for the CNC files, I will have to try to cut a mini one when I get finished with my ms pac-man.
-
I too express thanks for the dxfs. Does anyone with a burgertime know if the parts were dadod together or was the cab assembled by blocks? If it's dado construction I want to adjust everything to take those into account if at all possible.
Thanks!
/brian
-
good question
Im pretty sure its block and nails as there were several finish type nails that had been puttied over on the front and sides. after I stripped it down.
I'll take another look inside and post some raw cabinet pics of the insides
-
Mmm, since it's a Midway cab...(basicaly a (Ms.)Pac) I think it would be blocks...
-
Yes Blocks
Here are a few interior pics
-
If theres any othe pics or angles anyone would like to see Ill be happy to post have a ton of pics while Im doing this
-
I'm glad to see this cab coming back to life. Alot of people think that MS Pacman is the greatest but i prefer this cab and game over pacman anyday.
-
This is one of the best projects I have seen in a long time. I especially like the section where the screen printing process is shown. this post has got me inspired to add a burgertime cocktail to my future project list.
Great work rikitiki !
-
Any progress on your Burgertime cab?? Or more importantly - the side art?? I'm undertaking a burgertime "restoration" of my own. Actually its more of a recreation, but it will "look" authentic!!
Check it out here:
http://www.parabolictechnologies.com/Arcade/burgertime/burgertime.htm
I'm hoping to get it painted soon, as the front panel artwork I just got from rikitiki is awesome and I cant wait to put it on!!
Keep us updated!! :applaud:
-
Rikiti -
Any update on your cab? Im going to be in need of some side art, and I was wondering if your making any headway with yours?
PLEASE let us know!!
~V
-
Yes Blocks
Here are a few interior pics
I believe they are dado+blocks. I haven't taken my BT apart to be sure, but it looks to be built like every other Midway cab I've seen (which is dado+blocks).
Wade
-
Has anyone heard any progress from Rikiti on this project lately? Perhaps in another thread? Im following it closely because Im restoring a BTime as well, and I was wondering if hes made any progress - especially on the side art as I am in need of that next!
Thanks!!
~V
-
sorry for the delay, got put on the backburner getting ready to fore this bad boy up and should have new postings of stenciling side art very soon.
Nice Job on your BT wish mine was that fast
-
I cant wait to see how this turns out rikitiki!! I have been waiting for some updates haha!! good luck and keep them coming. Cant wait to see the logo plate!!
Neil
-
Still on the burner huh.......Merry Christmas rikitikki...keep up the good work.

An update showing the final stenciling progress of the Burgertime cabinet. Rich has finished his stencils, I would imagine they would be available for sale soon at ThisOldGame.com. What is soon? I don't know, it would be complete speculation on my part, but I would guess within the next month or so.
