Check out this "Arcade Clock" I made this morning in all of about 20 minutes. I think it came out pretty darned spanky...
-
:applaud:
I intend to do that one day.
There are people on ebay who sell custom clocks. All it is is a dollar store clock with a new paper overlay on the face.
-
Very nice. Would you mind sharing the image file you used as a background? I wouldn't mind creating one for my basement...
Jim
-
The image is 5MB as it stands, but I can compress. I'd hate to compress it more than 1MB...but here it is below...if you need a higher res, I need your email address to send it.
-
That's a pretty sweet idea... Nice!
I would have made the numbers sit in a black circle or something so they're easier to read. Other than that it's a perfect addition to any game room
-
very nice! what type of paper did you print it on: regular, photo or ___ ?
-
Hey, it's almost Qix-o'clock! How did Robotron not make the cut?!?! ;D

I was wondering how long it would take before Frizzle got some feedback about his choices! ;D
No Tron?
:applaud: Still very cool.
-
Nice work.
Hopefully Pixelhugger doesn't see this or we will have to wait another year as he goes off on another tangent.

Good idea for a revision...
-
...how about a Mr. Do! clock?
-

I used photo paper and a cheap-o $69.00 inkjet printer...
...as for the marquee selections, they were already in that order (I made an instruction card like I did for my Double DK+ for someone else with some 8-way games in it).
That said, I can put pretty any marquee I can get a semi-decent image of...
Pac Man is a natural...
-
Hmmm, might have to do that with a Johnny Walker clock I've got.
-
Son of a ---smurfette---...these clocks are available at Ikea for $2.99 a piece. The problem is they don't sell them via their website and there isn't a freakin' IKEA in Boise Idaho.
Damnit!
...if anyone comes across a clock for about the same $$ (sub $5.00) let me know please.
-
They just built an IKEA here about 45 minutes from my house. My wife has been doing the pee-pee dance she's so anxious to get there.
-
I can see Ikea from my office window.
If there's any interest I could stop by and see if they have 'em in stock.
I'd be happy to send to anyone interested for actual cost + actual shipping charges. 0% markup.
I have no idea what the total $$ might be, but the offer is there if anyone wants to take me up on it (and the local IKEA has them).

How is this clock different than your average cheapo wall clock you can get someplace like Walmart or Target?
-
How is this clock different than your average cheapo wall clock you can get someplace like Walmart or Target?
It's about 1/3 the price. Walmart & Target both have el-cheapo clocks at $12.99 (their cheapest at least online)...I will have to check them out in person.
-
Yeah, that's the sort of thing to get cheap in store. I'd check dollar stores, too.

have a google for clock kits, you could make marquee shaped clocks then, a little wooden surround would be easy enough to make
-
Holy crap it's 10 after King and Balloon, I'm late!! :laugh2:
That's a sweet idea there.
-
I had been planning on making a few of those myself. Nice work there.
I also had the idea to have 24 clocks lining the top of the walls in my office. Each one would represent a different time zone and would have the name of the biggest major city in each time zone under it. Like you see in the war rooms from the movies. :applaud: So needless to say, I needed a cheap source for plain clocks. Wal-Mart had them for like $3 each back when I came up with the idea. I am lazy and never got around to it, though, and in the meantime the price went up a buck or two.
So I guess the moral of that story is Wal-Mart has pretty cheap clocks as well.
-
Awesome!! I'd love that Mr. Do! artwork - can you send it to me at javeryh@yahoo.com?
Thanks!
-
...has anyone done a Pacman clock layout? ;D
-
You could also take the works out of the clock and make one of Melissa's carvings into a clock.
-

On it's way...it's a semi-large PSD file...I left it layered so you can change the numbers as you see fit.

Now THAT is a great idea...
-
...has anyone done a Pacman clock layout? ;D
When I get my new clocks I will come up with some new designs... Pac Man just SCREAMS to be done....and I want to do the "Atomic MAME" logo...which would be EXTREMELY COOL for anyone who uses that logo on their cabinet.
-
Forget Pac-Man, what screams to be done is Tempest.

It would be really cool if you could somehow cut the mouth area out of the clock without disturbing the clockwork. The hands would be exposed as they went through the mouth area though.
-
Big Lots typically sells those clocks for 2.99 or less.

I think I will go check out Big Lots this weekend...
Thanks for the suggestion.

Uhm.......guys...........who wants to know the time in their game room ?
;)
Nice, but personaly I feel it's a bit "crowded", at least it seems to be on the pic. But the concept is cool and easy. Great !!!
-
TRON spinner ...? Should be quite easy ?
-
...has anyone done a Pacman clock layout? ;D
Yup, did this about a year ago. Found a guy on eBay who sells neon clocks and allows you to submit any face that you like, so I gave him my design. I had always wanted to get the clock that you can see here:
http://www.zutco.com/prizes_usa_1.htm - 2nd item on the page
But I could never find one that was affordable, so I thought I'd just make my own. Bought the clock for around $60. Very ironically, I found and bought the original clock for half that amount, but I still prefer my own. I kept it clean with no background so the characters would "pop"
P.S. I still have the original GiMP .xcf file for this if anyone would like to have it. PM me if you like.
P.P.S. Forgot that I also had a so-so picture of this on my MAME controller homepage: (http://home.comcast.net/~plotor/Gameroom6.JPG)
-
Very nice, saw it posted as news first. Good work, Frizzle. That Mr.Do is especially cool.
-
TRON spinner ...? Should be quite easy ?
That was the first thing that came up with me; a TRON clock... would be very cool :)
-
Walmart in Canada has these clocks for $3.99. Be careful when removing the plastic cover the tab on one side is large and cannot be pushed in but the tab on the other side is smaller and pushes easily. The large tab had a bit of paper from the clock face covering it so the face cannot rotate.
-
Here is my Tron Clock & MAME Clock. I tried painting the Tron Clock arms RED...doesn't work too good. I need to go with a yellow or white....
I got the clocks from WalMart for $3.69. I left them numberless on purpose (who in the hell doesn't know the 3 goes to the right, 6 down, 9 left and 12 top??)
-
Those look awesome FF.
Love the Tron one.

You know, this has really given me some great ideas on how to spice up my Seahawks themed game room.
A Seahawks clock would look great on the wall next to my Seahawks cabinet. These are very cool little clocks and don't take a lot of duckets out of the ol' wallet.....great idea
-
Holy crap....2 main page mentions in a 2 week period. Amazing.
I am having problems sending these images to people. They tend to be 5MB or so in size and most email accounts balk at that size. Does anyone have an FTP site or some other depository where I could upload 5-6MB files for folks to download.
PS: The Tron one looks great from a couple feet away (which is where folks would be looking at them from), but up close you CAN see some pixels. The TRON image and the MAME image can be had at the arcade art site: http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/
If you don't have any photoshop skills and want the files as I printed them, I need to get that FTP site or what not. I will also upload the Mr. Do! and Marquee clockfaces there as well. Anyone?
-
FrizzleFried just emailed me all the files and I put them up on my webserver for everyone.
Marquee Clock (http://www.atomic-train.com/images/ArcadeClocks/marqueeclock.jpg)
Mr. Do Clock (http://www.atomic-train.com/images/ArcadeClocks/MRDOCLOCK1%20copy.jpg)
Mr. Do Clock Photoshop file (http://www.atomic-train.com/images/ArcadeClocks/MRDOCLOCK1.psd)
The following are directly from www.localarcade.com, which are what FrizzleFried used.
Mame Logos.ai (http://www.atomic-train.com/images/ArcadeClocks/NEW_MAME_LOGOS.ai)
Tron Spinner.ai (http://www.atomic-train.com/images/ArcadeClocks/tron_spinner2.ai)

FF thanks for uploading the clock images and AS thanks for hosting.

Wow, the Tron one is fabulous! That one needs to be printed in flourescent inks and have a blacklight ring around it, or some UV LED's...
-
Thanks for the file. Here is mine.

I made some of these like 5 years ago....
here are a few examples:

Congrats FF your clock is in the July GameRoom magazine.

Congrats FF your clock is in the July GameRoom magazine.

Yeah, congrats Fizzlfred. ;)
Hehehe I was wondering if you would catch that.
-
There is something about your ID that makes me think Fred and I am not sure why. I noticed that Shardian made the Fred mistake too. Thats why it is easier and safer to type FF.
Not a mistake I guess ;D ;D
-
Well...my usual nick for most everything else is BiGDaWG but online it is very...very...VERY difficult to register ANYWHERE with that over-used nick.
My friends used to call me Scorny when I was a kid...don' t ask.

Magnet_Eye - Where did you get those images and could you post them or a link to them?
The first two were from Flyers, and i cleaned em up and so on in photoshop. The tron, all the text and the logo I made myself in photoshop. Got the image from somewhere... don't recall.
I'd be happy to share the files with people wanting to make their own clocks, but do not want anyone using my files to make clocks and try to sell them.
-
With all this, I wonder how hard it would be to take my atomic clock apart and advance it one minute. The damn thing is 1 minute off all the time. And they are supposely the most accurate!!!!
-
Watch my store, I've actually been prepping a neon clock for sale with some artwork I commissioned in the past... this for those that aren't inclined to DIY.
-
For what it's worth, I picked up a very basic clock for $3.76 and one of these
(http://home.comcast.net/~plotor/Gameroom6.JPG)
cool neon clocks for $19.97 at *gasp* Wal*Mart yesterday. I have already modified the $3.76 clock and intend to do the same with the neon one.

Wow those are really nice !! have you ever made a ms pac-man clock? if so i would love to see it. or frogger .my 2 favorites
-
My latest clock...as a request for a friend...
-
Wow ! that look's so nice. I'm trying to find a frogger one.but i dont know how to do them. do they take alot of time ?
-
I don't think anyone has mentioned that you can buy seperate clock "movements" for a couple of bucks if you want to make your own custom-shaped clocks. You can get them online at places like this (http://www.klockit.com/depts/QuartzTimeOnlyMovements/dept-157.html) or get them locally at craft stores.
For my first wedding anniversary the traditional/modern gifts were paper and clocks, so I bought one of these from Hobby Lobby (or Michael's or somewhere like that) and built a clock out of paper.

Here it is ...completed.

Photoshop, inkjet printer, a pair of scissors & a $3.99 clock from Wallmart...
FrizzleFried,
This is an awesome idea!
Are you using just regular size printer paper or any kind of special paper surface? I need a reason to pull out my printer and I think this might be a good one. Would love to have a clock out in my work area...
-
I use generic photo paper personally. Standard inkjet printer paper may work OK...avoid crappy copy paper.
I actually scanned the numbers from the original face of the clock...I then photoshopped the numbers on to the background I want.
-
I want to make one for my little girls room for her birthday.but im not sure how to make the picture (
-
does anyone have a hello kitty one you can post?
-
^^
Hell I'm thinking of making one out of this guy's avatar.

Hell I'm thinking of making one out of this guy's avatar.
you could make a series of six of them...

Made this thanks to the inspiration in this (very old) thread:
The base is the Star Wars Atari poster. I removed the vector graphics from Darth Vader's body because this was to be a SW clock, not specifically for the game.
The font of the numbers is called Aurabesh and is a "real" SW font. I added some black edge around them to make them stand out better.
I also had to paint the hands white because they were black originally and that made them very hard to see.
All in all, pretty pleased, will look great on my son's room. The clock cost me a whopping €4.95 ;D
-
Cool. First I saw of this thread.
I posted about my custom clock for my Home Theater/Game Room on AVS last year. Here's the jist of it:
Preface: I couldn't find a clock for the HT I liked anywhere. I didn't want one I'd hear tic-tocking away, it needed to be visible in the dark but not glaring, and I wanted it to be theater themed in some way.
So I gave up and began designing my own:
* One sacrificial Craigslist $5 digital LED clock with photo sensor
* Scraps of MDF from my shop.
* A piece of galvanized flashing cut into the shape of a hinge
* alarm magnets to hold the 9V backup
* B&W Enamel paint
* Walmart $0.97 alphabet stickers
* white automotive pinstriping.
Total project materials cost...probably around $15
-
Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but it was such an awesome topic, it was worth revisiting. Since it was recently mentioned in another thread, i figured i'd post a pic of the centipede clock that i made. i made this like 2 years ago and it has been sitting in my basement since we moved...when i saw this link, i figured i'd go look for it and bring it up into the family room and post a pic
(http://www.severdhed.com/images/arcade/centipede-clock.jpg)
so, lets see them, i'm sure more of you have made arcade clocks since this thread went inactive
-
LOVE the centipede face, did you create that?
It's still on my radar to sell arcade clocks, Real Life has kept me from finishing my prototype...
-
LOVE the centipede face, did you create that?
I told the lady at walmart i did ;), or she wouldn't give it to me when i went to pick up the print. however i can't take full credit for it. i found the main graphic using a google search, loaded it into photoshop and added the tick marks and made it round, and pasted in the centipede text that i copied from another pic i found online.(cover art from the playstation game if i recall correctly)
i just wish the damn clock wasn't so loud. i got the clock at a Family Dollar store for $3. i had to paint the hour and minute hands white because the black ones just didn't show up.
