Title: Robotron Scores
Post by: Havok on May 04, 2007, 10:28:28 am
What's your best score in Robotron? I have been playing the mess out of it lately, and just last night reached the 19th screen with a score of 434,700. I think I'm starting to get good, but then I go and do something stupid like lose three guys in a row. Still, I'm starting to get the hang of the game. I hate those cruise missiles the brain dudes fire out, they get me more than anything else.

So, what's your best score?

Nice.  It doesn't matter how much I play this game, I can't even get half that.  I'd like to think its becuase I'm using a version of MAME before it was slowed down, but I'm using .96 so I can't use that excuse.  I'm robotron-challenged.

I think there was a thread about this a while back.

I was going to start this thread when I actually finish my cab and can get some real practice...  So far my best is 450,525 on a test panel.  Can't remember my best back in the day...

Holy crap!  Much as I love Robotron, I think I'd get bored after the first couple hundred million or so.  :dizzy:  I wonder how long that game lasted.

I've rolled it over 10,000,000 points playing it on level 10/30,000 per free man. Now that's a sweat fest. One bad tank wave and you could be toast. Brian Kings high score isn't really a test of skill but more a test of endurance. I take my hat off to that though since he must have played for a couple of days straight. Playing at factory settings is a joke for skilled Robotron players. You end up with so many men in reserve, you can go have a nap during the game. I've posted this elsewhere at some point. Try playing one hand each with a friend. One guy moves and the other guy fires. We managed to roll the machine on a few occasions at factory settings (level 5/25,000 per free man). If you think playing alone is difficult, try relying on your buddy to fire you out of a hectic moment. I was an evil 'mover'. I'd purposely take my firing buddy into hell and back. Sometimes we'd pull off feats that made us laugh out loud. I haven't played it seriously in a while. Boy I love that game. Thanks E.J.

Perhaps you should start a traveling seminar for the Robotron-challenged.

I thought Robotrons video blitter was fixed at .99. I definitely noticed a difference in scores when I jumped from .84 to .99.
I'm somewhere in the 300,000's. If I'm having a good game, it usually gets hosed up at the tank level.

After I lost my other arm, I resorted to playing with my feet.  It looks rediculous but hey, you've gotta do what you gotta do. ;)

Try playing one hand each with a friend.

Me and the wife do this all the time with Pinmame. It is pretty fun that way.

Well in that case, "I'm actually a lot better on the real arcade machine, but you see, there's a "feature" in the original game that caused the game to slow down..."

In other words, your high score is potentially infinite, constrained only by your free-time limitations.  Nice problem to have.  ;)

I think the arcade version - and perhaps an arcade replica, via arcade/multi-sync monitor and avga using Mame - is easier than running mame with hwstretch. I think the best I did on the latter, a couple/few years ago, was 711 grand. I think in an arcade, recently, I got somewhere near 800, and a couple nights ago using switchres I got 800-somethin thousand.

On the occasional occasion I might have a beer and have a small buzz, I'll be relaxed just enough to do pretty well. Course, a couple nights ago, I was just relaxed, anyway. A kung fu moment.

You notice how many scores are set in the first two or three years of the game coming out? Maybe it's just not as many people are interested in this kind of thing? I know I wouldn't do a marathon like that - though I see nothing wrong in getting to some satisfactory point, saving the state, and continuing later.

i have to blame that on spending alot of money in jupiter and beyond and other game rooms in the 80's use to have alot of time , i once spent around 16 hours playing star wars cockpit verson on one credit ended up around 23 million , from the time the arcade opened till it closed.

I hadn't thought of that in over 25 years. I had completely forgotten about the fact that I used to play pinball that way too. This allowed both of us to play on the same hard to come by quarter.

A lot of "expert" players use that method as a way to vary play in tournaments.

Aiyy, I misspelled it, too. Um, no I'm not a fan. I just looked up 'compunctuous' cos I thought it had an extra 'u'. Actually, it has a 'u' instead of an 'i'.
