Hey guys - semi newbie here - been reading and following along for some time. About a year ago a good friend and myself (more my friend than me!) restored a Mrs Pac-Man cabinet to it's original glory (and it now sits and plays proudly in a tavern in Pittsburgh) - anyways - I finally got around to constructing a cabinet for myself and I had a question regarding my joystick configuration. The cabinet I am building is going to be strictly NES - so which joystick configuration do I want to use - 4-WAY or 8-WAY?
Thanks!
UPDATE - google helped me find this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=49922.msg487036 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=49922.msg487036) Is any of this accurate?

Thanks!

BTW, you want to note that the thread you found is us. I'd say we are accurate.

I just pointed out that I found that thread via google because for some reason I couldn't find it through this boards search engine. I didn't mean to offend anyone. BTW - thee boards and this site have been extremely helpful in guiding me through this arcade process. Thanks to everyone for contributing to such a great cause!

If I was building an NES-only cabinet, I'd have to use real Nintendo Joysticks. That's what you would have found on an arcade Super Mario Bros, Playchoice 10, or other Nintendo title of the era. Just make sure you get some with the 8-way restrictors still in place on the bottom.

Dude, is this piss?

I just have to know why someone who needs to ask if the NES is 4 or 8 way is building a NES-only cab. It can't be to relive your childhood, because, well, then you'd know the answer to the question.
OK, that was mean. Sorry.
(Please don't ask how many buttons are needed, though... ;))

I'll take the abuse - I'm a newbie - I deserve it. It is in fact to "relive" my childhood, but I was always more of a passive gamer - so the fact that I never really paid mcuh attention to the technical aspects of gaming in no surprise. As for "reliving" my childhood - I'm doing this more for the WOW factor of all those who frequent my house. I recently finished our gameroom complete with a bar, flat screen TV, tons of Steelers memorabelia and jukebox - the next logical addition was an arcade cabinet. After watching my good friend restore a vintage one last year it got me pretty excited. So again, I'm a newbie so feel free to blast me all ya want!
Thanks again for all the help!

He's a Steelers fan - that explains everything.

I'm pretty sure I have a spare 8-way restrictor ...

Sorry. What could I do? If I were building an NES cab, I really WOULD use Nintendo joysticks. And after posting that, the rest was inevitable. At least it stayed friendly this time...

Heh. Too many :timebomb: 's this time?

I'd go with a 6-way, really.
