Title: how easy is it to take a TV apart??
Post by: squirrellydw on May 02, 2007, 09:35:57 am
I am going to be building a dartboard soon, how easy is it to take a TV apart?  I would just like the screen and the inputs not the case.  I see 4 screws on the back, is that it?

thanks

I don't think a TV will stand up to darts very well.

Yikes.  Be careful.

i didn't decase my television because of the chance of my death...

after finding a way to discharge the tube though...in retrospect...i would have done that and then decased my television...

do not just go poking around inside of your television without reading up on the necessary precautions first...!

Agreed.  Read the docs on how to de-case. Then read them again.  Then, if you have decide to go ahead with it, read again, but more slowly.

There's probably more to it than just those 4 screws.  The back panel on the TV (where the inputs/outputs are) is sometimes screwed to the case as well.  There's probably more places too -- maybe some sections of the case that just snap on or something...

I don't have to do it, just thinking it might save me an inch or two depth wise.  I know what the precautions are.

If you aren't sure exactly how to seek out common ground and verify its continuity, don't do it.  TVs vary heavily on the common ground path, with many going through points in the plastic housing in less than obvious ways.  If you disconnect that ground and then move the CRT around, you could be in for a very nasty surprise.

It can be done and it can be learned but it is not an "unscrew and see what happens" task.

You won't save much by decasing - the neck usually goes all the way back.. Another thing is that the necks on tv's are kind of puny, so there is a greater chance of breaking if decased.

Meh,

Don't listen to them old Nanas.

Get in there and do it.
Its no different than de-casing a PC monitor.

Remove the screws and lift the whole back off.
The CRT and monitor/tuner will still be mounted to the front 'bezel' somehow.

You can run bolts or brackets from the CRT mounting points onto MDF (or whatever) and leave the front 'bezel' on.

I removed a 29" TV from all the plastic bits on the weekend.
Only took about 10 mins and most of that was writing down where all the wires went.
Its in a cab now and running beautifully. Although I almost broke ---my bottom--- trying to lift the tube into place!

Don't be scared.

Oh yeah, if we don't hear from you ever again, we will suspect you had an accident.

 :laugh2:

Just kidding. GO FOR IT!

Spacies to the words right out of my post. Just nake sure you discharge it once you remove the back.

I was just doing it to save some space depth wise and make flush mounting the front a little eaiser.  Its only a 14 inch new TV

So are you going to leave the front plastic on?

Still easy.

Remove the back of the TV and at least take a look inside.

I think you will find there is less stuff inside a TV than a PC monitor.

I gotta agree that the neck board is just about as long as the case so thats a bummer.
I had to decase a telly to shove in a mame cab because it had side mounted speakers that took up too much space so I chopped em off. Fits fine now.

<lame joke>
I take apart TVs with a hammer, so taking them apart is easy.
Putting them back together is nearly impossible.
