Well not an exact clone but close enough! Thanks to Knievel for some help in getting started.
It's been a slow start for me since I don't have lots of time. It's birch ply all biscuit joined together.
This is my progress so far, this is a dry fit before I glue it all together this weekend. I had to pick up a couple more clamps last week.
I have more pics that I will upload later.
-
Wow. Great job on the construction - very professional looking. Can't wait to see how this progresses.

All these people who just knock out cabinet sides like its easy... i would think thats the hardest part!!!
another cab build to watch closely...
-
Good luck with the build & welcome to the forum.

Good looking cabinet - keep up the good work.

Thats for sure.
Gutshot- Birch is an interesting choice, will you just stain the cab then? Isn't Birch kinda spendy? (Not that there is anything wrong with that)
-
I know it's been a long time since I've updated but I've made a little progress. It has been tough finding time to build the cabinet.
I've got most of it complete, the drawer is in and I'm working on the area that the computer will be mounted. I got the hinges today for the front door and I need to put the bottom on. I should be able to get alot done this week since the wife will be out of town. :applaud:
Then I can get to the staining which should be fun.

I just liked the way the Birch looked, i dont like Oak and I will be staining the cab. I know most dont like the look of wood cabs. But it's probably the only way the wife would let it in the house.

Yep, first thing you gotta do if you're going to try to clone a woody is go out and buy a lot of clamps.

Yeah, tell me about it. I had 4 and had to get 4 more.

Little more work done in the past week. Got the bottom on and kick panel. Built the computer box and got that installed. And im finishing up the front door today. Then a little hole drilling for buttons and then on to the CP, which shouldn't be to bad. But I am thinking of doing dovetail joints for that so it might take longer. We shall see. I also played with stain colors, I like either the ebony or dark brown best, the red maghony is a bit too red for my taste.
-
Coming along nicely.
Love the ebony stain, a few coats of poly over that would be beautiful.

I agree with you. Red is too red.
1st choice : lighter brown
2nd choice : dark brown
I guess the cab final location can help you decide the final color....
Nice work.
Jay

So I've had some time to design a marquee, I came up with this retro poker theme which I like. I think this would look good on the cab, ;D
-
Nice marquee!
-
very nice work so far. I will be following closely! Would like to build my next cab in this style
-
I love the marquee. Very original. What would it look like with the cards in the middle a little bigger and behind the lettering? Just curious. I can't wait to see this thing come together.
-
The yellow on the marquee should go nice with the lighter color wood tone. What color t-molding are you going with? Look'n good.
-
I know its been awhile since an update and I know that not many like the "wood" cabs
But I am just about done with the stain/poly. Just finished the wet sand and last 2 coats of poly. Bout 10 coats overall, but its slick as glass now.
Got all the controls in, so now its just a matter or putting in the electronics. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but its still far away! :banghead:

Nice job on the stain. It should look nice in the living room, around the corner from the TV cabinet. You can tell your wife I said so. Good luck with the wiring.
-
Newbie here who will be building this cabinet out of MDF and painting... what do you use to make the cuts? Just wondering for my own benefit.

I did mine all with a router and some circular saw cuts with straight guides.

So I know I haven't updated in a long time. But this is where I am. I know the pics are not that great, It was kinda dark and the flash wasnt that great. The cab is in the house, I got the monitor installed, as well as the lexan bezel around the mount. The marquee was installed yesterday, got that printed from Mamemarquees.com, looks great! The door is off its hinges and the drawer is out cause I was working on the electronics inside. The speakers are installed and working, hooked my ipod up to it and listened to some tunes. Marquee light is working, and got power to monitor and to power strip.
So now I will concentrate on the CP and hopefully have this thing done within a month. Since I only get to work on it and hour here and there.
Still got to decide on which kind of computer to put in. Been reading alot on forums about Mame and AMD X2 and Intel Core Duo. I think im leaning towards the Core Duo but who knows, need to research some more on Newegg.
Anyway, :blah: ill try and get better pics up soon.
-
What size monitor did you use?
-
OMG, I LOVE that marquee. Very cool. :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :notworthy: Maybe some small sideart to match?
-
What size monitor did you use?
20.1" Westinghouse L2046NV, fits great
-
I went for Birch plywood as well - it was just $35 a sheet (4 x 8 feet) which is not bad at all - I only needed 3 sheets. At this price, even a $10 difference per sheet would have only saved $30 and frankly Birch looks and feels GREAT.
I was going to stain, but decided that I wanted to paint instead AFTER the cab was built :)
great work!
-
Few more pics of the cab, door is back on but drawer is still off for now. I added pics of the monitor mount and subwoofer mount, and the power switches behind the door. Left switch is Main power, middle is power for the monitor, right is for marquee light. I will eventually get metal engraved plates for identification for the switches.
-
woah. Very nice - I really like the grain and the dark color of the stain. I can't wait to see this with the CP!
